Several of the 'where have all the fish gone' threads where many folks seem to be crediting the changes to either commercial overfishing or global warming or both have failed to mention a very important factor affecting the sea and the climate.
This makes me think that the information may not be too familiar to some of us so here are several articles describing what the Conveyor Belt is and what the current situation seems to be. Given the profound effect a major change in the Conveyor Belt would have on the entire section of Europe where the UK is located, the time spent reading through these two (and others if you get interested) is well worth the time for all of us. The first article is short and pretty easy reading. The second is longer and a little more technical but also more informative if you stay with it. http://www.firstscience.com/site/articles/gribbin.asp http://www.whoi.edu/institutes/occi/curren...change_wef.html [ 18. interesting stuff newt. i read recently that apparently we know more about the moon, than we know about the workings of the oceans.a sobering thought, when the oceans are responsible for so much that happens all around the globe.
cheers dave. |

hey newt good read, have read something similar else where and i know the weather has made a change here for ex, seen 4 tornadoe's and several funnel clouds in the last 3 or so years,[1 just last week got some good shots on film to] never seen any before this in over 40. not so rare in maybe oklahome but they are in sleepy sussex well where meant to be, also heard they are predicting a very active huricane season on that side of the pond so look out if your in the zone mate, anyway the sea's are changing temps wise which equals more evaporation, and as they say what goe's up so to speak...........

There is no doubt that our weather is getting very strange. I can not remember any other year where we have had almost constant winds off the north sea since before christmas.

Newt, I have seen this argument before. Basically the world will get hotter and we will freeze.
We are on the same latitude as Labrador and we are going to pay for it one day. Oh well...at least we won't get skin cancer and we can fish for pike all year round. Someone once told me that ALL of the USA is south of the British Isles, not sure how true that is. [ 19. May 2005, 10:12 AM: Message edited by: Gobio ] |

QUOTE Gobio: er, skin cancer is related to increased U/V radiation, not warmth.Oh well...at least we won't get skin cancer and we can fish for pike all year round. The worst place to get it is at, or near the poles. (It was thought that the ozone layer had begun to repair itself since CFCs were banned, but it's now started to break down again!). And those pike may need to be caught through holes in the ice! Tight Lines - leon -------------------- |

QUOTE Gobio: Looks to be true Gobio. Take a look at this picture. The arrow points roughly to the northern tip of the state of Maine which is as far north as the US extends.Someone once told me that ALL of the USA is south of the British Isles, not sure how true that is.

Leon, OK got it, it's skin cancer and ice fishing for us then.
Newt, good research - so it's true then. So when we see pictures of all that snow in your northern states we have to remember that the latititude is similar to the south of France, which kinda proves the atlantic conveyor theory. Spanner, I forgot Alaska, I meant all the states excluding Alaska and Hawaii, I think they have a name for it....Mainland States or Continental States or something. |
