I don`t come from kent but my wife does, so we visit her family at least 3 times year in Canterbury, and i always take my gear with me. I fish the stour at grove ferry.the roach fishing there is brilliant and i always seem put together a good sized bag of fish no matter what time of year. There is also a good head of bream present and an awful lot of pike. i just hope by stocking these barbel it does not spoil the roach fishing.

The ones that have been stocked previously have all headed up river I'm told.

Yes to a certain degree. The old water authority removed some to try and start the breeding programme. They were big too.I remember seeing one of the last surviving ones (a definate double) wasting away in a race way below the damn at Bewl.I was always lead to believe that it was the off spring from these that were later stocked into the upper reaches that eventually produced the one time record. As for the origonal Medway barbel I dont know if they were natural or stocked.Would be nice to have a good head of them in the river, chub too but would it be right to interfere?

Some very small barbel have turned up in matches downriver of Maidstone Town Centre, and there is much speculation about fish at East Farleigh and Teston, some believe that some large barbel frequent the tidal stretch downriver of the sluice (there's just about everything else that side of the sluice, big carp and pike I've seen, thin lipped mullet and bass).
