Hi all
I'm considering buying an abu 5000c multiplier off my mate, but he's had the 'thumb rest' factory removed. Does this affect the performance of the reel? I thought this rest also doubled as an anti tangle thingy? Excuse my stupid question, but i've never owned a multiplier before. Cheers |

If it originally looked similar to this one, then the 'thumb rest' is the release and I wouldn't touch the reel as a gift.
If it looks similar to this one, then you gotta give details about exactly what the 'thumb rest' is since I don't think the reel has such a thing. ![]() QUOTE Peter Waller: Speak for yourself. Thumb rest as in a bit of plastic, that falls off anyway, or a metal bar that crosses from one side to the other? If its had the metal bit removed then I would be wary. Nice reel though. Are you left or right handed? If you cast with your right then it pays to go for a left hand wind reel. Don't forget the reel is used on top of the rod so the handle needs to be on the left when its in that position. Right hand wind ones are near a dime a dozen on E.Bay! The thumb rest is an aid to casting and reel stability, not an anti-tangle thingy!!

Look at Newt's top picture. I would call the thumb rest that bit of plastic on the top.

Removing the thumb rest doesnt make a difference, its a matter of personal taste. You can still thumb the spool with the rest in place, although I admit its a little easier without it. I've kept the thumb rests on my ABUs, never saw the need to remove them. The 5000 is the original model which ABU keep rereleasing. The best of the current crop is the 5500c3. That's if you wind with your right hand. If you wind with your left hand you need a 5501c3.
Out of curiosity, how much is the seller asking ? [ 17. June 2005, 09:19 AM: Message edited by: argyll ] -------------------- 'I've got a mind like a steel wassitsname'

The plastic I was refering to is like a guard over the top of the drum - it appears to serve no purpose. It definitely doesn't look like the guards on the silver one.
Are the Abu's ambidextrous (is that the right word - can you turn them from RHW to LHW)? |

Whew - lots of quick responses on this one Dan G.
Give a hint what line b/s, rod, and fish you are after and we can offer reasonable suggestions as to the reel you might want. Abu Garcia makes good ones but the size you need will vary with what you intend to do with it. I have some 4600s (the first picture), a couple of 6500s, and a couple of 7000s. Each is good for certain types of fishing. For instance, if I'm flinging lures all day, I do not like the spool release on the 6500/7000 C3 reels. It works but is awkward and after a hundred casts in a day, you'd hate it. QUOTE Dan G: No.Are the Abu's ambidextrous (is that the right word - can you turn them from RHW to LHW)? [ 17.
