Practice at home until you get it right.
Go here http://www.claphamangling.co.uk/knots.htm When you tie one, hook it to something, wind the line round your scale hook and pull, the knot should hold and the line should break at its breaking strain. You know your hook knot is good then. -------------------- Fly like a mouse

ian try tying some hooks of different sizes at home over a tray or plate then when done do as above and test them, all you have to do then is attach the bottom with hook to your main line when you get on the bank.

Hi Lee..Not too sure about using you're scale hook to test knot strength...The scale manufacturer's seem to advise against it as it can damagage the scales if the line breaks...I hook it through the handle of my scisor's and give it a tug...I like the paloma (think that's how it's spelt)knot my-self for general hook and swivel tying...Jim....

I suppose a general bit of advice would be to start on a large hook size and "progress" to the fiddlier small ones.
Some of the larger diameter lines are harder to use (less supple) so I would therefore suggest a thinner (but still easily seen) line and a larger hook. I tie my own spade ended at home, but if I want to tie a hook on the bank I use the eyed hook. It all depends on how good your eyesight is. Good luck -------------------- Getting there slowly..

I only know 2 knots, but I believe they are the best and strongest knots ever. I have never had one fail yet and I get snagged a fair few times and I caught my first Carp today and it was fine for that! A nice common out of the canal!
http://www.sea-fishing.org/ thats a little help on working out them knot tying pics where you are unsure which bit goes where and when.. animated pics ya see.. My fave knot is the uni-knot (<- may be known by another name aswell) it is bombproof I have found, and the easiest to learn! -------------------- Rex Hunt buys 100lb containers of laughing gas and takes them on every trip!

I use a drennan hook tier and now Chris Plumbs hook tier which is just about the same as the drennen.
My best knot is the grinner but on the sea website they have it as a uni knot? -------------------- RUDD
