I know it's not coarse related but Just to let you know, If any of you are in my area of the country over the weekend, HMS Scylla will be scuttled off the Cornish coast at Whitsand Bay, near Plymouth, on Saturday to create an artificial reef. Should be an interesting Sight

Out of sight, out of mind! Cheaper than scrapping? Dare I mention toxic waste? For heavens sakes take my Victor Meldrew head off!!!
Yes, it will be an intersting sight.

Peter - I wonder about the amount of 'toxic waste' from sinking a properly prepared ship. I think this bit on the GB Church (Canada in 1991) is typical.
quote:
Preparation of the ship included stripping the ship down to the steel, cutting holes for diver access and removing any hazardous obstacles. Diver safety is a key consideration; confined spaces are either sealed off or opened up for easy entry and exit. The final preparation of the ship included cleaning up all environmental hazards including cleaning the bilges and all fuel and oil lines in the ship.

Granted, they can't possibly get all the crud but certainly most of it.

Newt, I was thinking more of the hoohaa that is surrounding the ex US Navy ships that have been brought over here for scrapping, major bleat from the environmental lobby. Also the very major question about UK ships being sent to India for scrapping where regulations are much more lapse re asbestos etc and how it relates to working conditions. The GB Church sounds fine, but can the same be said for Scyla? Hope so!

if the gov had their way all the fleet would be out there sad.gif its a fine place to get rid of cars etc build a reef i think the americans started it with tanks just before D day ,could stop fishing close it if every car picked up off the street was dropped 1/2 a mile of shore ,beats finding mines in your net, now it will be mayfairs biggrin.gif

A great deal of sense to that Chesters. As soom as the near-waters boys hear of anglers catching then the next thing you have is boats within catty range, just outside the groynes. Wait till night and in they come, #astards! And they are the first ones to complain about overfishing hitting their catch results! A few hazards to their nets is a very good idea!
