With the new, probably not so new now, Dayglo colours etc available for making hookbaits, how critical do you think colour is?
I`ve caught equally, one morning recently with my mate using bright baits and me using dark fishmeals, so what`s the crack? Is it another commercial buzz? Does it really work when you`re fishing in, say, 14`, on the bottom in silt, even popped up? Are you going to be able to distinguish shades at deep depths? I imagine it`s a touch of both. Both attractors, firstly and then colour, if at all. Unnatural or what? What living creatures in the waters we fish are fluorescent? But I know they catch and would you switch over completely to a new fad? -------------------- "Where There`s Smoke, There`s Salmon"

I think it's a passing fad. People are just dying baits in fluorescent colours just because dyes are now avilable to make it possible. Someone will probably catch fish on glitter covered boilies next year, and deduce that their success was entirley due to that. Black baits were very much in vogue a few years ago, and they were considered to give you a bit of an edge at the time. If nice, pretty day-glo baits brighten up your life and make the world seem a happier place, then by all means use them.

i think the colour red starts to disapear at about?? 6ft under water ,combine this with fishing at night ,unless carp have lights can they see colour at all?

I do not know the depths on all this, but it goes like this.
Carp can see the red, yellow, orange end of the spectrum in shallow water, and the blue green end in deeper water. I have always just left my baits the way that they come out. Baits in water get a whitish look to them anyway. |

Not sure about UK fish but the SA carpers swear by a fluorescent cloud drifting up from the bait. Green is popular there.

Hi Newt,
Yes, Green fluoroscene is extensively used and is very affective. As you know I am trying to stick to boilie fishing with hair rig but I have sat at the waters edge often with my fellow fisherman using mielie boms and corn, their boms dipped in green fluoroscene, and they catch all trhe fish and myself nothing. Needless to say, I have also bought myself some green fluoroscene with an aniseed flavour and every now and then when my boilies don't work I succumb to the pressure and put at least one rod out with this muti. It does attract the fish. But I am then normally pestered with the smaller carp. Cheers, Willie South Africa -------------------- South Africa

I would hazard a guess and say that most fish in the UK are caught on brown / very dark baits.
Colour, not too important in my book. The Essex Man |

QUOTE wpurchas: Howdy Willie. Nice to see your name pop up again. Seems like it has been a while.Needless to say, I have also bought myself some green fluoroscene with an aniseed flavour and every now and then when my boilies don't work I succumb to the pressure and put at least one rod out with this muti. Do you have a source for that stuff that is set up for on-line ordering? I'd like to try but it is hard to come by in the US. The main sources I can find here sell medicinal quality only and it is very expensive - eye use mainly so has to be super pure. -------------------- "Democracy dies when the people wanting their government to take care of them outnumber those wanting to take care of themselves." - Author Unknown - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For a selection of lures, reels and other items, visit my eBay shop JaNewt eMart |

Newt, they dye the Chicago river green with the stuff on ST. Paddys day, so someone is getting the stuff cheap enough, and I think Paul Pezella sells it through wackerbaits.

Hi Newt,
Yes, it's been a while. South african suppliers have not caught on to on-line shopping. At least not as far as angling goes. The only company that is online that I am aware of is African Gold and I am sure they won't stock it as they are ex UK guys that promote boilie fishing. If you can not source from Wackerbaits, let me know and I will post some to you at no charge. Send me a private mail with your postal detail if you want me to do this. On Friday, I am leaving for a weeks vacation in Zimbabwe and some Bass fishing in the Lake Muterikwe. If I get a chance, inbetween the hippo and crocks, I want to try for carp as well. I also hope to negotiate further for that piece of land at the lake as I mentioned previously. (The seller has upped her price after the elections and the price should actually have fallen after the outragious farce) I trust Robert Mugabe is only interested in confiscating white Farmer's land and not small plots like I want to aquire. I will try and stay invissible to him. Cheers, Willie Purchase -------------------- South Africa
