I saw a trailer for a new documentry about commercial fishing starting on the BBC next week, it called I think The Trawlermen.

Is this not a cleaver publicerty campaign by commercial fishermen to make them look like hard working, hard done by men who risk their life every day so us the general public can have cod and chips for tea. When the facxt bis that fish and chip shop cod comes mainly from Iceland and Norway.

Given the time of your posting Sam I think that you must have had too much too drink and that it has clouded your judgement as the above statement is just about the daftest thing i think I've read from you. As someone who has worked commercially do you really believe what you're trying to tell us that the commercial sector has commissioned the BBC to mount a propaganda campaign just to make them look good to a tv audience.

Personally I would rather watch this type of tv any day of the week than some of the drivel that the BBC produces like Eastenders or is that Ken Livingstones secret master plan to subvert English culture and replace it with "Cockney speak" and indoctrinate the public at large to the "East end lifestyle".

Time to grow up I think Sam

I remember a few years ago , more than 10 now, there was a series about commercial fishermen from somewhere in Cornwall. It was based around the skipper of a trawler. It was actually very interesting and showed how difficult the job was. I did wonder why anyone would want to do such a job, many weeks away from home without seeing their family. The guy in the program had a little girl and he hardly ever saw here. I felt quite sorry for the little lass. They had lots of debt (due to dad not completing his tax returns) and If I remember rightly the eu and the then equivelant of DEFRA were the root of all evil.

Ill look forward to watching this new program.

Cannot say Sam until we have seen the thing but all the commercials I have come into contact with up here in Yorkshire tend to be very unassuming , publicity shy and would not want sympathy. O. K. they moan a bit, but doesnt everyone ?
Now Farmers they can moan and moan and moan and moan and round here there also very well off financally. Anyway-non fishing chat that better shut up or ill get moved.

You should all try reading the book that the series is based on.
It’s called TRAWLER and is by Redmond O’ Hanlon. It’s a true account of two weeks he spent aboard a deep-sea-fishing trawler in the north Atlantic.

These programs are a lot more interesting than watching a bunch of ****rs sleeping and arguing in the BB house! I hope the skipper has a bit more sense than that Cornish guy in the other series. The tax man must have had a field day after he divvied up the money, literally cash in hand, to the crew round a table in the pub. Payslip, what's one of them? rolleyes.gif

I agree Colin the seies you mention was preceeded by one about Scottish whitefish trawlers called "Last of the hunters" and that was about twenty years ago so it looks like these things come around every ten years or so. Both series were very watchable and very uncontrived and authentic .lets hope this one does not dissapoint.

The camaraderie and the friendship that the crew showed to each other I could relate to slack line. But then again I fortunately have never had to sail with you on a professional footing.
The friendship and hummer that the crew showed towards the scientist who where trying to collect information, should be an inspiration to some who post on here?
I remember that the lads working the north Atlantic did not think much of the North Sea.
