I'm not a great believer in carting half of Bennetts down to the river every time I go fishing, much preferring to take what I will need rather than what I might need.

To this end I am not adverse to making use of non angling stuff for convenient angling related containers, e.g. a redundant video tape box:

At one time, as a youngster, a pipe smoking relative was a very useful attribute. Baccy tins were ace!

A handy cigar smoker left this box in the boozer one evening, soon turned into a handy pocket-sized lure box.

And no need to add to Mr Fox's wealth by buying purpose built stuff!

DIY Fly Box
By Steve Devereux

How to Make a Fly Box from a DVD Case
Parts required:

Old DVD case
Old mouse mat
Piece of old open cell foam sheeting or old rig foam sheet
Take an old mouse mat and turn it upside down so the black foam is facing upwards. Cut to the size and include cut-outs where necessary so as to conform to the shape of the flat inside panel of your DVD case. Remember to leave a margin of around 1mm down the hinge side for clearance. Stick the plastic side to the flat panel with glue or fix into place with double sided sticky back plastic tape (carpet tape)

DIY Fly Box
Take a sheet of open cell foam (like what pc parts are packed with) or old rig foam sheet and cut to fit the other DVD case inside panel (the dvd holder side) and fix or glue into place. This acts as a cushioned lid.

DIY Fly Box with Flies
And when you have made your box you'll need to populate it with flies

Now all is needed is a label for your fly case, using a dvd cover as template and images gathered from the internet (none copyrighted) simply cut and paste in using your favourite imaging software.

Wish you had let me know about this a few years ago! My first downrigger was a disaster! I got (as is often the case) to blinded by trying to make one that looked like the real thing! An old cable drum fixed vertically (so it looked like a Cannon) short length of glass for the boom, wire trolling (Tide cheater) line and a proper release clip! All sprayed up in the mandatory matt black! Worked great up on Loch Awe for a couple of days but the standard of construction let it down and it soon disintergrated!

Now if I had seen the far simpler and more robust design you used the story might have been different!

Despite now (and for some time at that) owning several hundred quids worth of downrigging gear Im sure none of it really works any better than yours does! rolleyes.gif doh.gif

what these old things !

these where left over's and off cuts of balsa and smaller pidgeon tail feather quill's i picked up off the street ,people don't half give you funny looks when you pick up pidgeon feathers in the middle of the town ,i can't help it i see a right sized feather that looks ok and i pick it up.

the floats are quite small (3"-4") .but perfect for those shallow grayling runs and gudgeon fishing ,the body shapes go from blobs to micro avon profiles (purley random)

i'm considering buying a drill attatchment lathe this year for turning float bodies ,it'll give a more uniform shape than doing it just by eye.
