I'm very pleased with my 8' #3/4 SK3, as recommended here.
I've just broken the tip on my old 9'6 #6/7 Wychwood Truflex. Too many weighted nymph strikes, I fear I think I will replace it with another Sonik. I use the #3/4 rod for more of my fishing than I expected - I use the heavier rod for Farmoor, and if I need more distance on smaller waters, but the #3/4 is so much nicer to use. I think that the more tip-actioned SK4 has the potential to be a better casting tool, and it's mostly going to come out when I want some distance. I think that the SK3 might be more forgiving of my casting ability. I think I can improve and change my style, the rod can't. Some people prefer a 10' for reservoir bank fishing, most are happy with a 9'6, so I think I will stick with the 9'6. I don't want to change the line weight, I've lines and reels invested in #6/7. So, SK3 9'6 #6/7 @ £74.99 or SK4 #6/7 @ £109.99? I've got a discount code for another fiver off either of them. I'm favouring the SK4 at the moment - I suppose I'm really asking if that's likely to be a horrible mistake, rather than whether it's the ideal rod. |

I got the 9ft 6in Orvis Western 2 6# for £99 from Tightlines; a superb rod and casts like a dream. I am also using the new AirFlo ultra supple ridge line and it looks like they have got their floating lines right at last. Thanks Tony
I've just had a chat with Alan, and he's convinced me that the SK4 will do the job (and offered to fix my casting next time I'm up North!). Rod ordered! |

You set me thinking when you bought the 3/4# as i fancied a smaller brook rod; I ended up getting a 7ft three piece 3# Fladen travel from Tacklebargains and what a beauty it is. I landed a three pound Rainbow, trying it out at a small local put and take fishery and it was even putting out a three weight line around 9-10 metres against a stiffish breeze. Now all I have to do is get down the Len with Leon Roskilly and show him how to do some proper fishing. Tony This post has been edited by Tony U: Jun 5 2009, 01:34 PM -------------------- Tony

The first time I fished Farmoor, I got there to find I'd only packed the 3/4. Had some fish on it, though, 3-4lb rainbows are fun on a rod like that!
