Currently I am on virgin adsl with a modem. I dont really want to transfer to another ISP just to get a free router. Can someone advise on what I need to buy to become wireless. We are on adsl and I want to run 2 computers (1 laptop).

I have the 'modem' from my ISP connected to the inbound line, a router that has both wired and wireless capatility hooked to the modem, and a mix of wired and wireless devices using my router. The initial setup sounds worse than it actually is.

I dunno about the UK but in the States, a decent router for wired & wireless runs about $25.

Only the 'modem' belongs to the ISP.

theoretically you can use any hub ,i'v used many "flavours" on my line (BT still thinks i have a wired 220v biggrin.gif )
now i have a version 2 hub i can actually connect wirelessly (non of the rest had the power to go 10ft ) wireless is highly over rated IMHO its just not safe ,i'm fine as were in a culdisac (full of ancients) but in a housing estate i would go back to wires!
as the hub is 10ft from my pc the wireless part is "because i can" rather because its better the ethernet cable sits by the hub anyway.
i'm sure a BB supplier cannot legaly insist you use their hub it smacks of a monopoly? i know BT has instructions for setting up non BT hubs so i presume other suppliers do as well and ofcourse if you were forced to use certain hubs 3rd party hubs wouldnt exist wink.gif

Virgin don't use the phoneline so you need a wireless router that connects via their modem. I'll check tonight as to what mine is, but I did get a wrong one, followed by a correct one that failed to work, before getting it right 3rd time.

<edit>
Just noticed you use adsl, if so any 'normal' wireless router without or without a modem built in should work fine.

Rob.

I've never used the stuff that BT sent me.
I use a netgear Modem Router and wires. I bought a laptop last year while working up north. The Vodofone mobile BB service is so slow I just piggy-backed on a neighbour somewhere in the area, even though there was a mobile mast within 200yrds.
I don't think I would use a wireless router, even though all the ones local to me now, seem to be secured.
