Last night had promised to be a calm sunny one so I had decided on a wrasse session at one of my old marks. After parking up I had a 45 minute "yomp" to contend with and also a couple of electric fences to carefully negociate, not to mention a field with two bulls in it to avoid !!!
I arrived at my mark two hours before hw and after I got my breath back set up a light spinning rod with a sliding float and lugworm as bait. I set the rubber stop at about 15 feet. The water dropped away at my feet so casting was not necessary,I simply lowered the float in. The float had just been in the water about a minute when away it zoomed and I struck into my first wrasse of the session, not a big fish but nicely coloured. ![]() I had decided to make this a rock hopping session and to move on about every ten minutes so I picked up my small backpack and clambered about 25 yds along to the next likely looking spot. This spot produced nothing so after a couple of casts I moved on again. The wrasse I was catching were not monsters but a couple were a decent size and they were all hard fighting fish. ![]() What was impressive was the vivid colouration on them and no two looked alike. ![]() Now that morning the sunrise over Luce Bay had been a good one. ![]() I was to be treated to an awesome sunset as well. I took this shot just as a trawler was sailing past ![]() My last wrasse of the session was my best one and gave a real good account of itself. I did concider staying on a bit longer but the thought of climbing over those electric fences in poor light and making a mistake and walking into the bull field made my mind up for me. ![]() In total I caught about a dozen fish and all were carefully returned. Do you think my tactic of keeping on the move worked?? Who is to say,I may have caught the same number if I had stayed put at my original spot. What I can say was that it had been a pleasant way to spend a summers evening. When I got back to the van Dorothy said that I had missed all the excitement. The Portpatrick lifeboat had been called out to tow a yacht to Drummore harbour. Here is a shot she took of it as it got towed past the Clash. ![]() This is about as exciting as things get in Drummore which suits the pair of us fine. Those lovely pictures bring back fond memories of Ballan wrasse fishing from the rocks off Hopes nose in devon.Once hooked it was a tug of war to keep the fish out of the weed and rocks. They certainly can pull HARD!!!

Nice one John.
An evening's wrasse fishing would probably yield about ten or a dozen fish whether you adopt roving tactics or stayed at one good spot. The angler's choice really, and as you said, a pleasant evening whichever you chose. The West of Ireland is another place that produces plenty of wrasse, They call them "Connor Fish" there (don't know why) and that's how I think of them. That first dive for the seaweed is magic, isn't it? -------------------- RNLI Governor
