I feel at a bit of a loss watching 'Ol' Father Thames' sheeting by in winter, and wondering where on earth the fish will be. First I tried a bit of float fishing with single maggot, but my eyesight isn't good enough to trot at the distance needed in fastish water, so I fished very close (2 feet) from the bank, though still 6 feet of water. Plenty of small dace, but I had no faith I would get anything bigger.

So I switched to maggot feeder, just over a rod out. First bite was a nice dace of 5-6 oz, then a smaller one, then a 2lb 5 oz perch, the best I've had since I moved up near Wallingford! Very pleased.

I wonder when the temperature goes up if roach will show in that swim, or where else they'll have gone?
