29th March - K&A Canal

First entry for a while, it's all been a bit bleak lately. The couple of half-hearted/hungover sessions I've managed have both drawn blanks, so when I turned up today to find a bloody canoe race in full flow I wasn't exactly hopeful.

It's not really worth fishing when there's 200 competitive, would be sailors bumbling about so I went to the local lakes to waste some time, planning a return in the evening. That didn't exactly go smoothly either... I lost a jack under the rod tip, then hooked another which somehow managed to snap my rod at the spigot. It didn't half go with a bang... 2 minutes were spent checking for bullet wounds before I realised what had happened. What a catastrophe.

Anyway.. I sloped off back to the car on a bit of a downer and drove the 15 miles back to the canal, gladly finding it empty of canoes and spectators... Yep, apparently canoeing is a sport that's fun to watch for hours on end in the freezing cold  .

At least the perch didn't dissapoint this time. A small one early one lifted the mood slightly... then shortly after I lost a good'un.. certainly 2+, probably closer to 3 :( . A few jacks over the next half an hour kept me entertained before it all came good as the light was fading. A take on the drop resulted in this one of 3lb exactly and all the days woes were forgotten.

Apparently canoeing is an all weather any time of the day sport, I encountered at least 5 a few weeks ago at half 7 at night in sub zero temperatures!

Congrats yet again, Tom! Have you got any tips on catching them in this cold weather? Do you retrieve much more slowly than in summer, for example?

They started at 7am yesterday Viney.. no idea what's got into them. I suppose they might say the same about us though.

A lot of it is location Tenchy, they're in small shoals in this weather. Obviously with the lures you can cover plenty of water. I initially tried it out as a way of locating some perch to fish for with more conventional methods... then I got addicted haha.

Fishing as slowly as possible definitely improves results.. I'm jigging them in, so the only time I reel is to take up the slack in-bewteen jigs. Fishing so slowly can be painfully dull when nothings happening to be honest.

The last hour of light has been far and away the most productive time of day.

Thanks, Tom, that's helpful - including the comment about fishing slowly being dull, cos there's a risk I go too fast for that reason.
