Carp on the fly

24th July, Hampshire Commercial

As the title suggests I decided to try my hand at something a little different after some persuasion from a mate. We arranged to meet after work at a commercial venue neither of us had fished. I didn't manage to get there until 7, by which time he'd been waiting an hour but had caught a few rudd on the only fly he had with him, a Mayfly. (I was bringing the bait and appropriate flies from work).

A couple of pouchfuls of mixers were all that was needed before a few started coming up, prompting us to get set up as quickly as possible.

We were both using 9ft 5/6wt rods coupled with 5-6 foot leaders and various flies, the most successful of which was a "bonio", a small deer hair number that closely resembled the floating pellets we were feeding. Action was pretty consistent for my mate and frustration was pretty consistent for me. He was managing to hit 75% of the takes he received whereas I was missing one after the other. It became a running joke. Anyway, we finished up with about 15 fish in just over 2 hours, the best coming in at 12lb or so. Only 1/3 of these fell to my rod, I must have missed 20 odd takes  .

All in all it was bloody good fun, so good in fact that I'm planning a return tomorrow afternoon. If I could get a decent back-cast at some of my usual venues I'd definitely be giving it a go for some bigger fish.

25th July, NAA Stillwater

I finally had my first day off in almost 2 weeks and after getting some things done during the day I found myself horrifically bored within minutes of sitting down. What else to do but go fishing ay? By this time it was gone 6 but I still decided to make the 25 mile journey to Newbury for a quick evenings (2hours) surface fishing.

Upon arrival I found a few fish in the same area I'd fished recently and managed to hook one after 30 seconds of the first cast.. too good to be true? Of course it bloody was, somehow it managed to snap my double strength under minimal pressure.

Then came the fowl... every time I flicked more than 2 pellets out a barrage of geese/ducks/coots/feathered parasites descended upon me and made getting anything going an impossibility. I had a move around and managed to get a handful of fish taking, quickly nobbling 2 low doubles before the ducks found me again and didn't leave for the rest of the evening. VERY stressful fishing, but not a terrible result considering I was only there a couple of hours.
