The plan is saved by the backup plan! – 3rd June

And another visit to Harris Lake on the Marsh Farm complex, with the plan to fish a different peg than previous in an attempt to build on my limited knowledge of the lake.

Weather almost perfect for this fishery, not much wind, settled air pressure, and overcast skies, great I thought as I settled into peg 4 in the low light levels of 6:30am start. Fishing by 7am, one rod with pole float and paste bait close in, and the pellet feeder rod about 2m short of the island. However, by 9am the sum total of my efforts was a single crucian which fell to my legered worm/caster cocktail.

A move was required, so I did, and ten minutes later I was in peg 12 again, scene of last weeks visit. The move paid off, this swim was much deeper close in, and the lilies had grown on a bit giving some suitable cover.

Within the next twenty minutes my total catch for the day had been increased by a tench and two more crucians, all caught float fishing lumps of paste.

Another crucian was followed by my sixth fish of the day, a lovely tench of 5lb 3oz, again on float fished paste. This fish had just been netted when the tip of the feeder rod started bouncing around, the culprit a crucian of 1lb 14oz quickly joined the tench in the net enabling me to get a decent picture of the two species of fish that for me epitomise summer fishing.

Another six crucians graced the landing net during the course of the morning, along with another tench, bringing the total to eleven crucians and three tench, not bad for a mornings fishing! Most pleasing was that the majority of the fish fell to float fished home-made paste, but I missed loads of bites on this, so some fine tuning of the end tackle is required! Despite the fishing being pretty hectic, I was still able to find some time to appreciate the signs of summer around me, and as Chris Plumb would say, take an arty-farty pic or two.

Best fish of the day was the last one, a lovely crucian weighing 2lb 6oz, my biggest of the season so far.
