The plan – Attempts help a mate catch a non-carp – 24th and 27th June

My mate, TJ, had previously only caught carp from local venues, plus a few roach, and had asked me to take him somewhere so he could try for some other species.

First of all I needed a venue without carp in it, very difficult these days as most commercial fisheries are stuffed with the things.

So, after doing a bit of homework, ie browsing the internet, first outing was to a venue that neither of us had fished before, only 7 miles from home, nice and close. On arrival we had a quick look round the pond that was titled the “Match Lake”, which, according to the bailiff was stuffed with fish and only a few of them were carp. Can’t really agree with the status of “Lake”, as the pond was about the size of my local pub car park….which isn’t very big!!

Setting up in adjacent swims, we were both quickly into fish on plain old float fished maggots…..rudd….loads of them….taking the bait on the drop. Some nice sized ones up to about 12oz, although I think quite a few were roach/rudd hybrids, at least they weren’t carp, and you have to agree that the rudd is one of the UK’s most colourful fish.

Switching to a small free-running flat bed method feeder to enable us to get the bait quickly down past the rudd, TJ was soon catching some of my favourite summer fish, tench. Not big ones, but they gave a decent account of themselves on light tackle, largest being this one at just under 3lb.

Whilst I don’t fully agree with the stocking of barbel into lakes, this pond had a few, and coming up to a year old, even at 4ozs they do look really cute!

And one of the smallest, and prettiest carp I have yet to catch!

Early afternoon we decided to give one of the other lakes on the complex a couple of hours, to see if we could catch a catfish. Whilst not being geared up for a proper sized one, we were trying for the smaller kittens that we had been told were in the lake. As angling tutor for the day…I was thoroughly bushwacked by TJ, three small cats to him, and zero to me!!

Second outing of the week was to my current “home territory”, Marsh Farm, to try and get some bigger tench, and also a few crucian carp to add to TJ’s list of species captured. I thought that fishing the main match lake, Richardsons, would give us the best chance of the target species and so it was.

TJ managed to up his tench pb to a respectable 4lb 9oz

And added crucian carp to his list, with this one at 1lb 5oz.
