I must be bloody good at catching fish then!

You lot are harder work than catching fish.

Try this then, When Sams ole man BoB Cox fist started fishing further off shore, he was first, no comercial fishing was done on the sand banks in the outer Thames estuary, he was fishing vergin grounds by his self, obvisiouly he filled his boots, at the same time there were a few commercial skippers my self incuded who started to look around further off shore so soon there was a small fleet working the same areas that Bob Cox was fishing, there is only so much fish in an area so that ment less for Bobs anglers It did not mean there were less fish. Its the same to day, the anglers on the whole seem to be happy with thier catches, for example there are a few less commercail boats setting nets for skate this year, so it seems by the anglers catches that they got a bigger share, but there was no more or less skate in the Thames this year than any other year. It works the same for me, the less boats the more fish for me.

Economics regulates the fleet more than policitions. It's getting expencive to run just a small boat, the price of fish has not kept pace

with costs, Our catches have stayed much the same but the profit has halfed.

Stavey! you aren't talking about poxy cod are you ? you know those fat ugly things that prefer the cooler tempreatures.

I fish to live and live to fish.

The only reason the commercial fisherman round here stopped fishing for Rays is because in their words it wasn't commercially viable. In my words they had caught them all.

wurzel,

Are you able to provide us with prices paid over the past years for specific species?

I know a few farmers and your situation sounds similar - the Government has been telling us for ages that fish is the best meat available, whilst the likes of Tescos have driven down pices and forced the (higher paying) small businesses out of the market.

I don't want to play Devil's advocate here, but I do doubt that the independent trawlers make a great living, especially considering that their job is one of the most dangerous in the world.

I've seen wurzel's Bentley Turbo parked by his mooring (some may say it's a battered old van) and I wouldn't want to swap it for my old Escort van :D

Seriously, I'd be interested to know how times have changed for commercial fishermen, whilst the nation has lined Captain Birdseye's pocket...

In years to come commercial fishing will go a full circle back to old days with lines and hooks and not 1000 horse power pulling a trawl and that is on a small boat, unfortunatly fish cannot recoupulate fast enough after the hammer they have had this is what is happening, the commercial sector keep telling us there is less boats that is a fact but damage to the grounds has been done and effort now is by much more efficent catching boats large pair trawls etc if there had been no trawling the sea would still be full and that is a fact.

Stavey my comment was a bit of fun poked in Ian's direction. Wurzel your continuous denial of reality makes what Ian just said even more significant.

by me: hey wurzel, probably even before ian gillespie's time the north sea had a very good all be it visiting stock of very large fish that use to feed off the massive herring shoals, but once the the herring fleet had finished off the herring, what happened next? 1. to those very large fish? and 2. for a bonus point what was the name of those very large fish?

and answer by wurzel: Stavey! you aren't talking about poxy cod are you ? you know those fat ugly things that prefer the cooler tempreatures.

No wurzel that is the incorrect answer, i will have to deduct a point. To redeem it i will give you another chance, and a further clue, they are not of the cod family and the last part of their name rhymes with schooner??????
