when is a fly not a fly?

My definition of a "fly" is, that it must be made of fur and/or feather and be an imitation of a terrestial "insect".

Nymphs are "nymphs".

Furry/Feathery large flashy things, are "lures".

Things that are mainly metal or plastic are. "spinners/plugs" or "lures".

"Wet" sinks.

"Dry" floats.

If anything falls between these categorisations.......I won,t use it. :D

But most flies we use imitate water born insects with only a few, like Hawthorns, Daddy Long Legs and Moths imitating terrestrials surely?

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

What about when a fly line is not used?  When using a willow wand fresh cut from a pollard Macedonian style?  Or garden cane with leader as per my recommendations for Czech nymphing?  Or fly rod but at close range with no fly line out of the top ring?

Yeh, right - and you could add "dibbling" a fly over a bridge, trailing a fly from a boat, "catapult casting" on heavily bushed brooks and traditional mayfly dapping to your list of exceptions. You could even present a fly on a pole!

I suppose the definition goes something like :-

"I am fly fishing, you are bending the rules, he is poaching"

I suppose it boils down to Some people fish, some catch fish and some just drown worms :):P:P

Mind you I know areas where the humble worm is known as the GARDEN FLY.

It would seem there is almost as many opinions as there are flies. :D
