anybody have any info about any of the rivers in essex? i'm planning on doing a bit travelling by train/foot all around essex. e.g. colchester, tiptree, kelvedon, etc etc.

who are the local angling clubs and has anybody had any good results on any of these rivers?

I have fished the Chelmer in Chelmsford a fair bit with very good results so far! I was hoping for more of the same elsehere in essex.

Many Thanks

Hi ricey, can't comment too much on Essex rivers as most of my fishing is done on stillwaters. However, the Billericay & District AC lease a handful of river stretches in Essex. It might be worth checking the website here

Essex rivers i have fished include the Wid, a small streach of a tribraty of the chelmer, a small stream with some big chub. the suffolk stour above colchester is great but is mostly leased to clochester angling club. the chelmer and Blackwater is very accesible. The stort from bishops stortford through Harlow is on day ticket and is great for chub, perch and pike with one or two big carp. the river lea on the essex border with herts is great for big barbel and chub. try this link. http://www.essexangling.com

At Braintree there is the River Pant, which has some free fishing on the locally known Fairview estate off the Coggeshall Road Braintree, there is some exellent Chub Fishing here.one bank is controlled by Billericay Angling Club but the Fairview Meadow is Free fishing.

The river Pant is called the Blackwater downstream of Braintree. Also the town sections of the Rivers Chelmer and Can in chelmsford are day ticket. Also Flatford Mill on the suffolk stour is day ticket.

I spent most of my fishing time last winter on Ricketts backwater, controled by Maldon AS http://www.maldonas.co.uk/

Very nice quiet chub fishery, some bream roach and dace as well, miles from the nearest road, and rarely saw another angler on the banks.

Fishing wasn't exactly prolific, but I usually managed 3 or 4 fish a day, around 3-4lb.

Maldon also controls a section of the Blackwater that holds all the usual river species, I've also seen a few carp in there too!

P.S. Peter, I've heard of barbel being stocked in the Blackwater, but not the Chelmer, I'd love to know more
