The obvious conclusion to be drawn from this is we pay ourselves too much in relation to our productivity. Who's fault is that?

You've only got to look at the way the print industry has been ripped apart over the last 5 years to see the effect of relative labour and transport costs - and, frankly, mismanagement has had on an industry which is a weathervane for the economy.

Lack of investment in the business,

The overwhelming desire to provide an immediate and ever increasing return for shareholders,

Reluctance to look outside the organisation for management training,

Fat Cat severance payments for poorly performing management,

Underestimating the need to motivate the workforce by means other than beating with a stick,

Apparent lack of management concern when key personnel leave disillusioned,

Recognise any of these in your workplace?

Our perception of time as an orderly sequence of regular ticks and tocks has no relevance here in the alternative dimension that is fishing....... C.Yates

its orvis after more profit with low paid labour more like ,at least the machinery isnt being scrapped unlike the workers and cornwall isnt the employment high spot of the country ,in its heyday intrepid had a thousand women workers and production couldnt keep up ,lack of investment in R & D is the cause exactly what intrepid died from, now whats left is going for the same reason :(

if you have research and development the results in better reels overturn the high cost of manufacture ,the premium for quality makes up the deficit but you have to stay ahead of the others ,itrepid didnt and died

some of the workers are old intrepid men ,they have great pride in their work and motivation after whats gone on in the past isnt a problem but few workers on a poor wage cannot compete with many on a bad wage (probably ok in china though)

It is a sad day. BFR made reels under a number of brand names. I don't want to get all poltical but . . All the time overseas labour is cheaper coupled with modern transportation and communication we'll see British jobs disappear.

I not making excuses but boards rooms have to answer to shareholders ( Dyson ect ) which means producing the maximum return. Problem is that unless as a country we can produce a product, thankfully witness the rise of the UK service industry, there would be no one left earning to buy any form of product.

Next time you'r out and about try to buy British, it's just no so easy these days as it was 10, 20, 30 years ago.

I belive all products, cars included, should display their country of manufacture.

we can relax though in ten years we will be a third world country and all the jobs will return :)

even 20 years ago it was difficult to buy british ,it may have been made here (or more likely assembled here) but few "british" firms are british owned ,Intrepid in the 70's was american owned ,BFR was Orvis after 1993

All of which, with a bit of lateral thinking come under the terms of paying ourselves too much and bad management...

Shareholder returns - wanting more for their money than the business can stand in the long term. I.E paying themselves too much.

Pay-off's for fat-cats = bad management - the supervisory board allow the situation.

Demotivation - a management issue.

Lack of R & D - a management strategy.

Do I detect a common theme here?
