Sportfish are offering a free one-to-one pike flycasting clinic at their Reading base, see the following. There doesnt appear to be any more detail on their website, so if you are interested, then I suggest that you give them a call.

'Fly-fishing for pike has increased enormously in popularity over the last few years. Trouble is, if you are not already a fly angler, knowing what to buy and how to use it in this exciting branch of the sport can be quite difficult.

Now, Sportfish, a Reading based fly-fishing mail order company, is offering to show you the rope – for free! Visit their Reading lakeside tackle store on Saturday 22nd January 2005 for free one to one casting clinics from the Sportfish team of professional instructors.

Also available on the day will be:

Special offers on tackle and outfits to get you started

Casting demonstrations with a pike fly rod

Fly tying demonstrations of specialised pike flies.

And much more.

If I was closer I would give it a bash. I would be more interested in the fly tying part of it.Am going to try for the pike on the fly at Whitefield Loch,Mull of Galloway next year. Will attempt to make up some lures over the winter. Have a few ideas in my head but will accept any ideas from you lot chaps. Just done an article for the forum this morning - with piccies -on tying up a sandeel imatation. It is with Elton at the moment being tarted up. He should be posting it onto the sea forum eventually. Would like a bit of feedback from you fellow fly tyers.

You can view the finished lure now on the sea forum. Look for "Snatchers lure"

Tight lines to you all

I thought so too Budgie. Even if you know what you are doing, the occasional flycasting clinic is always useful. Gets you out of some of the bad habits you've dropped into.

Snatcher at the risk of boring those that have already seen them, here are some useful pike fly patterns. They range from 3-8 inches. I do tie bigger but I prefer this size range.

Excellent Argyll I have even more ideas whirring in my head now. The top middle one,is that a popper head? Did you make it or buy it?

Thinking of doing some type of perch fry imatation, gonna use green Krystal Flash Pearl and put on vertical bars with a black marker pen. Where do you find the best/cheapest place to buy tying materials at the moment mate. Need to stock up shortly. Do Veniards still do a catalogue and if so how do I get my hands on one?

It's a commercial popper head and to be honest its the only one that I didnt tie. it was tied by a Floridian friend of mine as a pike popper. But its really a slight variation on one of his favourite tarpon flies. Haven't used Veniards for years but they still supply most of the major flyfishing retailers. Most of my stuff comes from Hunters Angling in New Boston. Excellent website, try google. in the UK I use http://www.sportfish.co.uk or Rutland Angling Supplies (they have a website too).
