chesters1:

take the coldest places on earth theres water under the ice so long as theres a summer temp rise

Sorry chesters1 but while the artic ice is over water, the antartic ice sheet (all 4500 meters of it in places) is over land. No water under there at all.

but thats snow ice newt ,it fell when antartica was dry ,there has been a lake found in antarctica but few venues for fishing

its not frozen because of the higher pressure so doesent fall into british winter weather ,i agree if theres perma frost you will get freezing down to the bottom of a lake but even below perma frost it gets warmer than the outside temp

Partly to do with "what I fancy" but also convenience/distance/cost/chance of a return on the time spent, and probably lots of other reasons!.

I just can't get enough fishing.

I will post more later, bit of a traumatic time right now, just had one of our dogs put down, and have to talk to son in Japan,

I wonder how many anglers have woken up in a bivvy on a winters morning to find the water has frozen and their line is stuck!!!!!!!!!!!

What happens if you then get a run!!!!!!!!!!!

While pole fishing I have had the elastic freeze to the ptfe bush.

Happened to me a couple of years back, woke up in the morning to find the line well and truly iced in place! Luckily my fishing prowess were up to scratch, which meant the bait stayed unmollested until the water thawed out....

I've also had that happen more than a few times (well the first paragraph anyway ). If you're lucky the line will pull through the ice or else you may get snapped up, probably without knowing it until you reel in. I caught caught fish under ice before now but that was imn the margins and the line hadn't frozen in.

I guess you can grease the line, but if it looks like it's going to freeze most people wouldn't fish overnight. Not only are you asking for trouble if you get a run, but freeing the line(s) in the morning is an absolute nightmare if the ice doesn't thaw.
