Sleeping Bags

I wouldn't waste my money on a sleeping bag produced by one of the fishing specialist manufacturers they are too bulky and overpriced for what you are getting.

For general summer autumn and spring fishing you would do a lot worse than getting hold of the British Army Sleep System which can be seen here Note it has a central zip which is the easiest and quickest way to get out of any bag and by having a single zip it is warmer than one with zips down each side.

If I was flush and wanted an all year bag I would get one of these from Snugpack made for our special forces see here for details

both very good however if like me you are 5'4" with a 54" chest there a bit cramped i like a bit of room in my bag

Well I'm 6'5" and 18 Stone and I have the 3/4 length zip version its plenty long & wide enough for me and I can get out of it in seconds.

It has a heavy duty "crash" zip, meaning you can just pull it open without using the zip, and if you just use the velcro zip flap and not the zip you can be out even quicker.

The quickest way of getting out of the bag is not to do the zip up in the first place. That's where central zips let you down - i.e. the army mummy style ones. The larger duvet type bags are much better and they stay over you without having to do up the zip. I also find the larger ones far more comfortable and spacious. On the downside they are more bulky, but they can easily be strapped on to the top of your rucksack as they aren't massively heavy.

They all have pro's and cons, you pays your money and makes your choices.

The crash zip on the British sleep system is really easy to exit, it has to be it was designed for infantry in theatre where you would not want to be stuck inside your sleeping bag.

Remember duvets where designed for use in houses not outside and are useless as sleeping bags and remember the more space you have in a bag the more cold air you are trapping; thus reducing its efficiency.

If I want a sleeping bag I want it designed by a sleeping bag expert not someone who primarily produces boilies or banksticks.

I agree with some of what you say but 'fishing sleeping bags' are not made by fishing companies, they are made for them, by someone who knows what they are doing. I said Duvet style and not Duvets per se - they are more than warm enough in the coldest of winters (I've used mine down to -7C, and that's under a brolley).

As I said previously you buy what style you prefer, but they will all do the job required.

Thanks guys, like rob says you pays your money and makes your choice, i can see the benefits of both bags, i am tempted by the army bag but on the other hand i am tempted by some of the features of the carp bag too. Guess I will make a decision next month when i get to the buying.

Thanks again guys for the advice and info, will let you know what i go for.

For what its worth the system Ive used for years is as follows-

I carry two sleeping bags, one a standard issue British army bag and the other a British army "middle Arctic bag" (this is basicly a light weight "zip up duvet" type sleeping bag you could buy anywhere cheaply). In summer I undo the Army bag and lay on it with the Arctic bag opened up duve style over me. In winter I simply reverse this and have the heavier bag laid over me.

Easy to trap the top bag under you each side to keep the warmth in but absolutely no problem getting up quickly. Both pack away smaller than any of these "4 season type bags. Remember as well when I fish at night Im fishing but laying down keeping warm maybe "cat napping" at best! Clothes off, boots off and zipped up in a bag in a bivvy fast a kip aint night fishing its camping!

Sometimes though I want to "camp".Away trips in the winter when Im only staying overnight to avoid driving backwards and forwards but only fishing during the day are a good example. Here I can combine my system by putting my main bag inside the middle bag and roast my nuts off! Very versatile ,very warm and not to expensive from a Surplus supplier.

Sadly no longer got it but for Zander fishing at night I used a German Army sleeping bag. With these you can unzip the bottom and stick your feet/legs out. They have arms as well.Dead handy if you are sat up in a chair fishing at night.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Great amount of info, thanks guys.

Still undecided as to which bag at the moment but it will be either the Big Snooze by tracker or the British army one. The army bag I like the look of because of the single zip (crash zip and velcro) and the fact that it goes down to -15 and the great feedback it has been given by you guys.

The Big Snooze because of the fact you get a bit more room in the bag and that crash zips, and i like the idea of being able to fasten it to the beg chair, and because of the feed back it to has been given on here.

Decisions, decisions.

Cheers again guys

As Rob quite rightly says you pays your money and you takes your choice its all down to your personal preference
