FISHING IN VILAMOURA, PORTUGAL

Recommended Posts

Hi all - i normally post in the coarse or fly forums, but i am hoping you guys are just as friendly and helpful!

I'm going on holiday to Vilamoura at the start of may and would like to do a bit of fishing from the pier...

I know you cant fish in the harbour, but i wondered what to expect from the pier and whether i need a licence (i understand I might).

I will be taking my usual shimano STC spinning rod (10 ft), shimano stradic 4000 loaded with 20lb braid and a few lures (rapala magnums, tempest sandeels and berkley powerbait shads) but i wondered if i should take some light bait tackle? Do floats work out there?

I may also go out on a boat - anyone tried it?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

click on the link above mate for detailed info on licences. post no 6 onwards.

Thanks much appreciated - the licence system looks pretty simple.

I have a few rapalas and soft bait lures to try for bass from the pier/rocks, plus some smaller floats etc for mullet if they show up. Trying to keep tackle down to a minimum as i'm sneaking it into the suitcase!

Hi Dan,fished there a few years ago.Young Snatcher and I fished at the start of the east pier into the harbour. We used light gear and floatfished bread and caught a lot of mullet near the sewer outfall!!!! :headhurt: Oh well, its what mullet do.

One of the local boys was floatfishing with fish strip and hooked some decent size gars, very acrobatic they were.Hope this helps

Thanks John - I go on thursday until following tuesday so will report back.

When you say the pier, do you mean the one close to the mouth of the harbour, or were you actually in the marina - i know there is a sewer overflow actually in the harbour?! I thought you weren't allowed to fish there, although i have seen the mullet and bass patrolling round there.

Going to take some floats, lures etc and see how i get on for a few hours.

Hi Dan,

I'm going to Vilamoura in the near future.

Any tips on where to get a shore licence?

Where to fish (legally) for mullet?

Any other tips?

hi, some good boat fishing to be had in Vilamoura fish jump on the hook, only downside the whole boat is fishing for the skipper , he gets to keep the catch. and its quite expensive for 4 hrs out.

hi, have a try at beech fishing in Quatera next to Vilamora away from the bathers it goes deep about 10 metres out seen some nice fish caught along there, speak to some of the locals they will tell you the best spots are.

I got 'escorted' out of the marina shortly after hooking and losing a double-figure bass! I can't remember if I was more gutted about losing a double-figure bass, or about not being able to try and catch the even bigger bass that I could see swimming around!

Anyway, my 'Mee no speaka di inglish' routine didn't wash with the local police, but they were really good about it and simply told me to go and fish the beach and not in the marina!

There are some really massive bass to be caught at Vilamoura, and you can catch them off the beaches at night. Depending on where you stay, you'll see the locals fishing at dawn and dusk with bubble float rigs (for casting distance) and white Redgills. Work an artificial eel from any beach or pier and you stand a really good chance of a bass first thing in the morning or last at night. I'd quite fancy lobbing a whole squid or two out at night too - I bet that would work.

There are also loads of huge mullet to be caught too - but why fish for mullet when there are loads of double-figure bass about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
