Which mainline?

Braid

- initial cost $24 per 300 yds

- use 2 years, reverse so the previously unexposed part is toward the outside, use another 2 years.

- total 4 year cost per reel of $24 and not a lot of time wasted respooling.

Mono

- initial cost $6 per 300 yds

- use 3-4 months until use and sunlight make it unreliable. Respool.

- sometimes when fishing snaggy water, get hung, pull for a break, and have to discard all the line that was out because mono is unreliable after being stretched too far.

- Total 4 year cost per reel at least $72 and all the bother of respooling so often.

YMMV but for me, braid is not only more fun to fish with but is less expensive to use.

used soft steel for ages! Still using it now never let me down once. Landed a cannal 16lb er through snags and it cut through a small dead branch that wedged itself on the line never left any impression on the line what so ever. Never looked back since

JDW:

nash bullet is a great main line and hooklink material. very robust

I was in the process of buying some of that the other day JD, but the geezer in the shop convinced me to buy a spool of SUFIX SUPREME, which was a similar price, but he reckoned it's being raved about.

Does anyone know anyhting about Sufix line, have I been suckered? What worries me is that no sooner had this guy sold it to me he was awarded Salesman of the Month! & it's only the 3rd.

Only experience of Suffix line was a bad one Im afraid.Took some guys catting once. They insisted on getting their own rods made and using their own tackle. They spent an awfull lot of dough on very specialist gear for a one off trip and I dont come cheap either! After all this expense they spooled up with a Suffix line that a rep had given them free to try..........

Not sure which one it was but it was pre-stretched and very thin.It wasnt up to the job at all.Good job I had spare reels with me!

Might be fine in the right circumstances.

Whenever I read people swapping and changing lines I have to ask why? If what youve been using is crap then I obviously understand changing it but why a crap line is chosen in the first place when there are several proven lines that many experienced anglers will vouch for?........usually down to penny pinching. Most of the best lines are expensive.I know I and many advise Sensor and thats cheap but we also reccomend changing it regularly as you can do with it being cheap!

Why has such a reliable line as Maxima Chamelion gone so out of fashion? I dont hear many long term users of this brand complaining.Cant say that about the "modern" carp lines can you, people seem to think that the latest one out will give them some kind of edge and change loyalties as quickly as their rigs!

I dont really care if a line breaks at 12lb when its meant to be 15lb as long as it always breaks at 12! dont care if it is higher or lower diameter than others as long as its consistant just want reliability. And in all fairness when I used mono Maxima was for me.Brought 1 duff spool which knocked my confidence (and confidence is the key issue here)in the many years I used it.Tried many others but went back to it.

Also dont get taken in by all the advertising flim flam.Best example was "How great Big Game is as it breaks at a much higher strain than its rated at!" shame many didnt just look at the diameter and see that it was just under rated in the first place!

When fishing crystal clear waters for a low stock of wary carp. I like the thought of the fluro's being less visable, the Korda underwater video convinced me that fluro's were less viz so I swapped to krystonite. I cant comment just yet but I have more confidence with it

Daiwa Sensor for me, I have the big spools of 4lb, 8lb, 12lb and 15lb. All have been great so far I think apart from the 8lb line, I think it's a duff spool. My local tackle shop advised me to go for Sensor due to it being cheap and reliable, and he has a fair few expensive lines in there I can tell you.

I agree with Budgie's comments, I can never understand why people chop and change brands if they have no issues with the brand they last used. Changing to a braided line or Fluro line then fair enough.
