Now, now ladies :D

Carp are probably very popular because they are the biggest freshwater fish in the UK (excluding the non native or non naturalised coarse fish of course). That and the fact that they are meant to be one of the more cunning fish to catch. Not too sure about the later but that's from the old days.

Big, beautiful, lots of variety & as Budgie says terrific fighters. Try a mid to upper double figure Ghostie in shallow water..amazing!

Their reputation for cunning has taken a knock lately, but thats because a lot of people guage it by overstocked waters where they are constantly hungry. Have a go on a lightly stocked rich water where the Carp can afford to be wary. I think you'll find old Izaak wasn't far out.

I could come up with an answer like :

"Because anyone can cast out a boilie on a semi fixed bolt rig and sit behing swingers and alarms waiting for a bite"

Just to cause an outrage from some of the carp anglers!!!!!!!!! We ALL know that this is not true as ALL forms of angling require certain levels of watercraft and skill.

My actual answer is

I think it is a combination of the size/fight of carp compared to other species and that youngsters see carp fishing as the most fashionable form of angling.

Lets face it, there are ALOT but not all carp anglers who sneer at others who dont have the right bivvy, rods, reels, pods, alarms etc.

I dont want to upset carp anglers with the above statement but I think most will agree with me.

If carp angling attracts more newcomers to the sport because of the above so be it.

The more new anglers we can attract the merrier.

They then hopefully will try for a few other species to broaden their scope of angling.
