Carp?

Rudd,

I think your comment is an erroneous assumption from a non carp angler. Sure there are 'fishing snobs' but don't lets pretend it's just carp anglers. In my experience I have never had anyone sneering at my tackle <oh err :D > I am also not aware of anyone who has.

Again there are some who like all things shiny and stainless and there are those of us who are happy with whatever it is as long as it catches. The vast majority of anglers couldn't give a monkees about what gear matey's using.

As for why youngsters like carp fishing; probably a combination of the size of the fish, the restful nature of it, the idea of being able to camp out overnight and probably a dozen other reasons.

Can we kill this nonsense once and for all, please?

There's NOT a lot of sneering, snobbish carp anglers out there - in fact I've never met a single one who fits the above quote. If they do exist, they'd be seen as the pr@ts they are and rightly regarded as a sad minority.

Friendly banter, wind-ups and good-natured mickey-taking aside, I've never seen or even heard of a single incidence of such rude behaviour - apart from the suppositions of non-carpers.

And on the eighth day God created carp fishing...and he saw that it was pukka.

I do my fair share of carping.

In fact last year was my best ever year for catching carp as I had more carp sessions than for all the other species put together.

I even caught carp when targeting other species!!!!!!!!

I knew I would upset someone with my post (but did not set out to unlike other posters lately).

My carp gear is mostly entry level.

Nash outlaw pod / slumber chair, fox micro swingers, fox mini / micron alarms.

Daiwa strickforce rod, 4500 shimano baitrunner, leeda carp landing net.

I dont have a bivvy and keep my end tackle in a stanley tool box.

Last year my 2nd rod was a drennan super specialist with a match type reel. (I have just invested in a fox warrior and a 6000gte baitrunner but not used yet).

I mainly fished club waters with no problems.

The few times I fished a day ticket water I had on all three occasions young carp anglers take the p!ss out of my gear.

1st time, On arrival two lads walked round the lake to see what was happening.

They stopped at every peg where anglers were bivvied.

When they arrived at my peg they walked straight past me, one said "look at the gear that old learner is using he hasnt got a chance", the other one laughed and off they went.

When I walked round the lake later in the day these lads had top of the range everything.

At the end of the day I had caught four low doubles while they had had two each.

2nd time I had a 20lb mirror on a freelined cube of luncheon meat using the old daiwa rod again.

Some lads heard the commotion and came to see what was going on. They didnt even help me land the fish, just went off saying thats not carp angling and what sort of gear is he using.

3rd time. Both sets of lads were there togehter in swims about forty meters apart.

"Here comes that bloke with the old gear again" was shouted across the lake.

I will admit these lads are a very small minority and probably the type that have no respect for any other species of fish apart from carp.

But it does go on.

Probably more so amoungst groups of teenager anglers.

I still stick to the fact that youngsters see carp angling more fashonable than other forms of angling.

Having nice matching rods, reels etc, will appeal to teenagers (they have to have the latest mobile, trainers, cd's, cloths etc) as will catching the biggest fish (the my x is bigger or better than your x syndrome found in most youngsters).

I would also agree with Robs comments on the staying out all night camping thing.

There is also the social side of carp angling that will appeal to teenagers.

I was not knocking carping as I dont like anglers having a pop at other anglers who do other forms of angling.

Ed - I think you've nailed it. Either the same person or at least using the same gear.
