Weather Sites

As Peggy will tell you I'm a weather junkie. So it'll come as no surprise that I'm doing a review of weather sites at the moment. (Sorry, Elton, haven't told you yet.) What I'm looking for most of all are accurate and comprehensive forecasts for several days ahead so I can plan when and where to go fishing. My favourite sites out of many are:

http://www.onlineweather.com

This has recently been much enlarged with a huge number of interesting links but as a result has become slow to load. However it's both accurate and extremely comprehensive with 2 to 5 day outlooks for a large number of locations. The town outlooks give general weather, % chance of rain, max temperature and (unusually but importantly) wind speed and direction. The only thing missing is minimum temperature but the company tell me this is coming. The area outlooks give a little more general background.

Slow to load but not as comprehensive as Online Weather. It doesn't give wind speed and direction but I do consult it for minimum temperatures and will continue to do so until Online Weather add this feature.

This is one of the many weather charts from Purdue University in the States which shows isobars (i.e a pressure chart) and areas of rainfall. The best part is that it forecasts 10 days ahead! Obviously it's not as accurate as a 5 day forecast but is surprisingly useful.

In fact I've been monitoring the accuracy of a lot of internet forecasts. All are pretty good except most of the American ones with Yahoo consistently the worse. In particular Yahoo has often been incorrectly forecasting too low temperatures for my area, especially overnight figures. The best U.S. 5 day forecasts are the charts produced by G.Mueller of the USAF which can be accessed via Online Weather.

BTW, I'm sorry for not including hyperlinks but I'm using Netscape and can't remember how to! I *think* I used to use the insert button on my toolbar but it seems to have disappeared. Or was that only in Word? Any help gratefully received.

Seems as though the Forum automatically adds hyperlinks except in signatures. However I still have problems with hyperlinks elsewhere so the plea for help still stands.

BTW, I noticed that Online Weather now has local sunrise and sunset times for each town on the outlook pages. It's interesting to see the differences.

Steve,

Any idea when that review will be done? I need to know if it's worth going fishing on Saturday :D

I've just been sent a press release for a new weather site at:

http://www.weathergens.co.uk

I'd be interested to know what weather sites fellow anglers use, as this is one area in which internet access should give fishermen an advantage.

All the best,

Elton

I've been using this one for work and fishing for about 3 years.http://www.metcheck.com/

More reliable than any others in my area at least.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Wow, with 9 years data and research, that's going to the daddy of all reviews...can't wait.

Mind you which ever one Steve recommends, the owners will probably retire a short while later. :whistling:
