If you're fishing a lake or canal, an alternative is the 'polaris' float. These don't need stopknots. They surface after casting and cock when you tighten the line. They don't work if there's much flow, however.

Hi, Ronnie

The best way to plumb the depth when using the slider is to use your last dropper shot as your plummet. If you use a relatively large dropper shot ie a number 4 or 1 you will see when it lays on the bottom by your float tip sticking out of the water more. You must of course before you start plumbing know the level of the float as each weight registers. If you try to use a convential plummet it will probably pull your stop knot through the float eye. If you or anyone else would like to know more details on how to fish the sliding float method feel free to contact me on 01787 378869 or e-mail on neil@ukws.com

Happy fishing
