i remember seeing a dog buscuit superglued to a piece of cork, and the hook passed through the cork, i'm sure it was on here.

 

maybe that would give you a cheap alternative

Nightwing is probably the most avid fly-angler-for-carp I know of. He posted a link to a really wonderful piece of video of carping with the fly rod. Shot by a guide service that is doing more and more trips as people find out how much fun it is to hook a large carp on a fly rod.

 

This is well worth a watch even if you never intend to use fly tackle for carp.

Excellent video - it was interesting how easily the anglers picked out of the water and unhooked sizeable carp without a net (except in one case)

 

LOVED the reaction of the guy that lost what was obviously a very good fish :D:D

 

As Newt says, well worth a watch.

Never mind mixers, last time I was in Texas I fished a 3" LIVEBAIT on 5 weight fly gear :D:D

 

It was the only rod I had with me. I had been catching various freshwater sunfishes on fly, and a bass had a go at one. The bass ignored the flies I had with me, so I "improvised".

 

Back to my carp fishing days of the late 40's - casting the lip-hooked livebait on a size 4 hook, from coils of line pulled off the reel and laid on the ground.

Vagabond, now those are what I would call 'eating size' bass. Nice and I'm betting they tasted wonderful.

 

In most cases, it is also healthy for the fishery to cull that size out.

My friend owns a lake and we catch a lot of carp on the fly from his boat. It's great fun to do.

 

We use 7 or 8 weight lines and a fly tied from deer hair and clipped to look like a chum mixer! We were our last night but there weren't many fish on the surface so all we caught was a couple of pints of guiness.

 

I've also done a bit from the bank using a roll cast to get the bait out.
