Andrew Burgess:

Polly,I think you should name the angler wheather he is famous or not.

Having six rods out and fishing with six rod he is breaking the law.

He should been reported to the Bailiff, the police and the EA. It is obvious he has done this before and he is getting away with it.

It would be very stupid of polly to name the big arse on this or any other public forum or media - unless of course he has had a big win on the lottery and could afford to pay several million pounds in damages and get this forum shut down! :(

If you're sure of the facts, and have evidence that can stand up in court, then the threat of libel shouldn't worry you.

In truth, the 'name' angler is unlikely to sue. He probably boasts about his rules-breaking to his fellow rule-breakers. It's a big source of amusement when like-minded selfish 'stars' get together. To be publicly outed would probably boost his standing among his peers. A sort of anti-hero, if you like. I'm not joking.

But at the end of the day, the best approach would probably be to approach him face to face on the bank. Ask him politely whether he is fishing with six rods. Point out, still politely, that he is breaking the law. Then tell him that you are very disappointed. Say that you used to look up to him, but now hold him in low esteem.

We're getting into psychology here, but why does he want to be famous anyway? Odds are it's because he's extremely insecure and wants to be liked on a massive scale. He wants to be admired. As humans we all do, really. Nobody likes to think that they are despised by someone else.

Might work. Might make him think about his actions. No guarantee. But it's worth a punt, if only for your own satisfaction...

I am once again not condoning this guys actions.BUT a lot of you are doing it again. Why keep banging on about the rod licence bit?we have no knowledge as to wether he had one or fifty of these so why keep mentioning it.It is things like this that lead to litigation not facts.I think that Polly should either name this bloke and be prepared to stand up for his comments or not have brought it up in the first place.Or at the very least follow Petes advice by having a quiet word with the fishery manager.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Polly, if there were two of you as witness to this then you will have nothing to fear. Both of you should make a statement to the EA and get this guy charged with everything they can throw at him.

I understand Elton may be concerned but if you and your Bruv are certain of the facts and are prepared to "stand and be counted" then you will be OK.

Many years ago I was asked to witness a case of blatant lying about a certain "wannabe famous" anglers catches, I wrote this up in Angling magazine...the editor asked me if it was a true account and I said yes and so he published it.

We, the magazine and I that is, were threatened with libel, but we had a witness so the liar backed off.

Crikey, Poledark, was that the Whitehall pike?

I'm pretty sure the Oxford specimen hunter expose (don't know how to type expos-ay with a fancy French e-acute accent) was in Coarse Fisherman.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

If it's the Whitehall episode, then I think it should be re-aired for the benefit of young anglers who don't realise what complete c@ck-ups can be made by our angling leaders.

After all, we learn from history. Or at least we should.
