Do I give the impression that I do "tar them all with the same brush", Andrew?

I thought I'd made it clear that it's the stock levels, lack of diversity, and escapees into the system, that annoy, and worry me. Not whether it is a commercially run, syndicate, club, or free water.

I have chuckle, and poke a little fun, at some of the antics of species specific anglers, whatever their target, but I understand because I've been there. Not as committed as some I admit, but I've lost jobs, relationships, as well as wasted money on unnecessary, 'must have' items, in the past. The whole scene is not new in itself, it's the scale of the commercial interest that's new, that, and the knock on effect throughout angling is in itself a cause for concern, IMO.

John.

No, sorry John, bad day at work!

There does seem to be a tendency for some of us to leap on our favourite subject at the mere mention of carp now on AN, sometimes it's warranted (IMO) and sometimes it isn't. I think Den was on the money in this case. (Although he did make his point in his trademark gentle way!)

To clarify, I am totally with you on the issue of carp spoiling previously natural waters, and the effect easy, purpose-made carp fishing is having on fishing as a whole and the environment in general, but the water in question is 30 acres and holds 30 carp - surely we ought to be praising this kind of place? I'm just not sure how we ended up on this topic again, apart from the use of the word 'carp'.

Even if it was indirectly aimed at me Sean, (and it was obvious most of the comments were), then if you'd read my posts, you would realise that your aim was way off mark.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Just out of interest, I caught a 1lb 13oz Rudd from my pressurised carp lake last Friday. They are getting steadily bigger each season, partly due to the huge amount of spod mix that goes in each day :)

Carp may compete(?) for food, but never caused any others to reduce in numbers or quality did they? I would hazard a guess that the silvers would actually benefit from all the surplus put in by carp anglers.

Don't think it makes any difference even if the top 5%, 10%, 15% or 20% of the biggest Carp all died. The real giants are only fished for by a small number of anglers who clock up these whackers. For most it makes no difference how many of these giants are swimming about. You can always afford to loose the whackers and the tiddlers, most of us will be fishing for those in the middle range of weights. So for me if all the 30's 40's and 50's went it would have no impact on my fishing.

I think you are right, the silvers seem to do very well on many "Carp Lakes".

Den

Definitely Den, roach fishing in particular has has a real resurgence recently because of 'carp food', there are quite a lot of very good roach stillwaters now for just that reason.

Tench seem to benefit too, something someone said the other day made me stop and think - can you think of one water where the tench grow really big (12lb+) that isn't carp fished? I couldn't! Tench in great environments eating natural food seem to top out at about low-mid 10s, the giants do appear to get the extra weight from carp food.

I'm not editorialising either way, but these things do appear to be true.

Tell me if I'm understanding what you're saying Den.

You think that adding 1000 carp to a water, that already has a good mixed head of fish, is not going to have any detrimental effect on the other species. In fact you believe that it will benefit them?

Could you please explain how you came to this conclusion.

depends on the size of lake size of fish added, how much fish are in the lake in the first place how old the new fish are, and the old fish, then depends on the water quality too. i think theres a 1,000' more questions to your question to answer bud, but i don't know anywhere that would just stick 1,000 carp into a lake unless fry-smalls.
