mark barrett:
i use sugar too added to mine whilst boiling. but i heard an interesting tip on keith arhurs radio show the other week to add chillis to the hemp, i plan to give this a try as in the summer i use hemp in vast quantities, about 75 to 100kg a summer.

What station is Keith Arthur on and what day time?

Note your comment regarding using Bicarbonate of Soda and not Sodium Bicarbonate, why?

They are both NaHCO3 and therefore chemically identical.

No, I am not a clever scientific nerd, was just curious so looked it up in Google.

I bought my hemp from a pet shop, and it didn't all go black, and not much splitting occurred. I soaked it for the regulation 12 hours or more, and cooked it for an age, but still no joy. Is the stuff from a pet shop treated in some way ?
The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

Wonder why the food industry and the pharmesutical industry have different names for it.
It did cost more from the chemist than from the supermarket!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say you didnt have enough boiling water or tried to cook to much hemp at once.

It doesnt always go black, sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate of soda helps this process.

The hemp may of been very old and dried out.
The fresher the better.
When cooking my last batch it had not split after 30mins so I added more boiling water.
It started splitting a few mins later.

Sodium Bicarbonate is almost always cheaper, Bicarbonate of Soda is sold in a fancy packet under a brand name at a highly inflated price.

Best to look for BP after the name for the cheaper product. It's the same with Asprin, now there's a thought?
