ANGLING UNITY, IS IT POSSIBLE ?

My article in the latest issue of Barbel Fisher is basically a response to questions raised by a member in a letter to the Committee.

It also has some relevance to the points made at the start of this thread.

I hope that it will draw a line under all that has gone before and allow us all to move on with a positive frame of mind.

I attended the last NASA committee meeting

and following much discussion confirmed to those present that I would recommend to the Barbel Society Committee that we affiliate to the new organisation.

I understand now, that a major costituent part of this new body will focus on the rivers and river anglers so obviously we would wish to be involved.

The blueprint looks good, and if the right people are elected to the right positions, and if the collective will is there, it will succeed.

If that does not happen, and if this new alliance lacks strong, dynamic and visionary leadership which can appeal to all anglers, then it will fail.

Let us all hope the former will be the case.

If you want to read the article then I'm afraid you will have to join the Barbel Society or borrow a copy from a member as it is only available to our membership.

Thanks Steve

Is there any BS member able and willing to fax me a copy of the article on 01442 398044?

I am concerned about your comments on rivers and river anglers within the new organisation. SACG and NASA have always represented all specimen or specialist anglers, still water and river. There has never been a distinction for us. Hence the SACG stance on maintaining the river close season.

I am looking forward to reading your article.

Blimey. The BS must be a secretive lot. No reply and no fax in over 36 hours. frown.gif

Come on Steve you started this thread, kept avoiding your own question and now want to keep the reply a secret amongst the BS members only. I think others posting here will make their own judgements about that!

Take the personalities out of it, which is not implied in your last post, and are you still in favour of unity with all anglers or not?

Mike,

Apologies for the delay, I've been feeling a bit rough ( And no, I did not forget the "of" !), should have been out fishing this weekend anyway. Oh well....

You have no need to be concerned over the inclusion of a "Rivers Group" within the proposed structure of the " Specialist Anglers Alliance".

It is absolutely essential for the success of this new organisation that member groups and individuals can feel, know and actually see that their own problems and concerns are being channelled and dealt with in such a way that they will receive the amount and proper attention they consider to be warranted.

One of my major critiscms of the SACG and for that matter any umbrella organisation is they take on too big an agenda, and endeavour to be "All things to all men".

It is an impossible task to try and carry through every angling problem and achieve results, and this is why there has always been the inevitable frustration. It is no good jumping on every bandwagon unless action is planned.

If you want proof of that statement you need look no further than our political parties.

I for one would much prefer to see a dozen different topics dealt with comprehensively and taken through to a successful conclusion.

Rather thsn a hundred topics all receiving an initial interest and then consigned to the back burner.

That will just not be good enough.

So the structure must allow for specific problems wether from the pike, carp, eel, barbel, whoever fraternity to be dealt with, and this means the "Experts" in each field must run with the subject and take it through, including if need be presentation at the highest level.

This was all discussed and pretty much agreed at the NASA meeting,in fact the recommendation for a "rivers group" came from Barrie Rickards, he fully understood the point being made.

Regarding the SACG stance on the close season,I would only say if a different line had been taken or they had sat on the fence then there would have been no chance of the Barbel Society entering any sort of liasson, and I would suspect that would have been the attitude of other member groups and individuals.

The very subject of the close season would surely come under what we would all agree as the big picture.

My previous posting was clear, certainly not secretive, I will be recommending to the Barbel Society Committee and membership that we join the SAA.

We are already members and supporters of NASA so it should not come as a great surprise.

Hey Mike, as a passionate Stones fan myself, one who probably got as big a kick out of seeing them play a year or so ago at Shepherds Bush as I did catching a fourteen pound barbel nearly ten years ago, well almost!Rest assured we are on common ground.

As I've said before, focus on all we have in common, not our differences and I'm sure everything will work out fine.

Having a rivers group within the Alliance does not fly in the face of that statement,it can only help.

No doubt you will soon read a copy of Barbel Fisher, but better still why don't you join?

In the interests of Unity.

I started this thread to see if it would produce new ideas and points of view on a serious subject.

I'm sure we have all benefitted from the many and varied postings.

John,

I have explained to Steve Redman the full story regarding the quote in the Anglers Mail a few weeks ago and he accepted my explaination of how innocent remarks can be misquoted in print.

The particular journalist is pretty new to the game and I have since borne this in mind whenever he contacts me.

I would be more than happy to talk to you on the phone if you wish, but rest assured I have good friends in the Chub Study Group and have total respect for the organisation.

Phew!

Good Fishin'

Steve.

Thanks for the response. Sorry but although I am trying for my first barbel, no luck so far ;(, I am already a member of too many groups and another, no matter the cost, would not get my attention in any detail. I try not to be a joiner unless I can contribute and there is only so much time available.

You seem to hava a misunderstanding of how SACG functions. Decisions taken at SACG are taken by the member groups, all of those present at meetings, anyway. Individuals and small groups are empowered to follow their own interests and run their own campaigns, with the support of the whole group behind them. When the BS was running its own campaign to keep the close season on the rivers you could have had 10,000 anglers behind you by using the "cover" of SACG.

I quote "One of my major critiscms of the SACG and for that matter any umbrella organisation is they take on too big an agenda, and endeavour to be "All things to all men".

It is an impossible task to try and carry through every angling problem and achieve results, and this is why there has always been the inevitable frustration. It is no good jumping on every bandwagon unless action is planned.

I agree with you about concentration of effort, but often the topics covered by SACG are controlled, in part, by those we nedotiate with at Government and within the EA. For SACGs part we have a limited agenda of actions at any one time, with lots of campaigns waiting for the right person or group to come along and run it. There is no Godhead deciding these issues; which will be followed up and which will be left, manpower and resource determines how much or how little we achieve.

Within any framework that will be the reality, as it must be for the BS. I think we are speaking the same language and want the same things. If there is a difference between us it is in how we perceive the workings of SACG and its achievements. This is illustrated by your quote "Regarding the SACG stance on the close season,I would only say if a different line had been taken or they had sat on the fence then there would have been no chance of the Barbel Society entering any sort of liasson, and I would suspect that would have been the attitude of other member groups and individuals."

It is the member groups and individuals who decide SACG policy. It was they who voted to maintain the river close season. SACG is a co-operative organisation, where any member or group can have his or her say, and I am pleased to be able to say they often do. There is no hand down of decision from the executive. The executive are there to carry out the members bidding and to run the organisation.

Anyway 26th November is not far away and I reckon specialist angling will be stronger for the new organisation. These are exciting times and we have much to achieve. We will all need to be pulling in the same direction. The semantics will fade once we are all around the same table.

Hope you are feeling better and get out on Sunday.

Mike

Hi Elton,

When I opened up this thread tonight, my two Rottweiler dogs, rip and grip who were sitting at my side, yelped in pain then ran out through the french windows.

That was two hours ago and I hav'nt seen them since.

Regards,

Lee.
