Angling Quotations

Some 20 years ago I was taken to a poetry recital by my then girlfriend - (the things you do for love - eh?). The poet was none other than Ted Hughes (later poet laureate) but who at the time I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of. Hughes was famous for his images of nature and I sat transfixed for 2 hours at the sound of his voice. The next day I dashed out a bought a collection of his works. One of my favourites from that day was Pike...Here are the opening 2 verses...

Pike,three inches long, perfect

Pike in all parts, green tigering the gold.

Killers from the egg: the malevolent aged grin,

They dance on the surface among the flies.

Or move, stunned by their own grandeur,

Over a bed of emerald, silhouette

Of submarine delicacy and horror.

A hundred feet long in their world.

Ted Hughes (1960)

I've got a whole book of quotations, and it comes in very useful from time to time.

the book is ' The Magic Wheel' (an anthology of fishing in literature), edited by David Profumo & Graham Swift. Mine is a paperback version, published by Picador (1985), which cost £4.95 for 460 pages. The ISBN is: 0-330-29072-X.

Chris,

Freds quote thus twice due to gremlins beyond my control and limited patience.

But oh, the power of the written word.

Bruno,

So thats where you get all those clever phrases from.

And here was I thinking that they were all original.

Any idea where your Quote "Study to be Quiet" originally came from?

It's a quote from Isaac Walton, himself, and is actually the very last sentence of The Compleat Angler.

Chris,

Thanks for that, but I have been ferreting away through some of my books before tonights barbel session. I've managed to trace the qoute back to the new testament of the bible and Theessalonians, chapter 1V 11.

Good old Issac must have been a bible thumper, has anyone tried to read that mumbo jumbo?

Izaak was indeed a religous man smile.gif

Some of my favorite quotes from Staffords greatest son are:

1)Angling may be said to be so like mathematics that it can never be full learnt!

2)God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling.

3)No man can lose what he never had
