Im Meads, live in lancashire been fishing since i was about 7 years old (now 23) always fished the canals and small rivers as a child but recently ive got an urge for big fish, carp mainly. Just trying to get my head around all the rigs etc at the minute and what situations they are used in....

See ya round the forum.

Hiya Meads and welcome.

Feel free to join in on any of the existing discussions or start one for yourself with any questions you want answered.

I can tell you the main trick to catching large carp is to make sure you are fishing where there are large carp. It sounds simple but it is amazing how many anglers try for large fish in ponds where there basically aren't any.

Beyond that, a basic hair rig works fine for most situations. The fancy rigs are pretty specialised so probably easier to stick with a basic, general purpose rig for most of your fishing.

Thanks for the tips, i do generally go to places were there are big carp, i got my personal best last week at 15lb (not massive but i waqs happy) floating bread :)

I have been sitting at the computer the last few nights reading tutorials and going over the hair and making some up myself, i do seem to be getting there and they are getting neater the more i practice.

I want to give pellets a go, can you simply hair rig them or do you to construct a fancy pellet rig with spike on the hair.

Wish I could help but pellets are not a think I'm familiar with. I read about their use on here but I doubt anyone within a thousand miles of me is using them so I don't have much chance to watch and learn nor would I want to pay sipping to import the things from the UK or Europe where they are commonly used.

If you post in the coarse section and ask for help with using pellets, you should get a variety of information and it will include products you can buy locally.

Didn't realise you were from the USA, and i notice your NC, is that North Carolina? I have family in Maggie Valley NC, fished lake junaluska when i was over there and had some really nice common carp :)

Indeed it is North Carolina and Maggie Valley is only about an hour or two west of us. Beautiful area.

If you plan to be in the area again in the next few months (we are moving to Florida but the exact date is pretty squishy right now) let me know and I'll give you my phone number.

Will do, no plans as of yet but that could change... It's weird your moving to FL, thats were my family moved from, they lived in st petersberg, i caught a fair few lady fish whilst i was staying there too and some big rays.

We will be moving to the Panhandle and over toward Alabama when I retire but living full time in a road worthy caravan so relocation will be easy enough.

Jan & I are almost exclusively fresh water anglers so don't need to live near the Gulf or Atlantic.

I have kids & grandkids in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina so we want to be within driving distance of them but also near a large military base since I am retired from the Coast Guard and can use the on-base facilities..
