Andy/Steve - gardening was not one of Jan's strong points so she could surely relate to the problem. :D :D

Steve, as I told you at the time, I bet Jan would have had a laugh at that. There is no fault and no blame - the planting was adapted and took place in a true 'Brotherhood of the Angle' spirit, with people pulling together. It was beautiful.

I feel rotten about the whole thing, I didn't even realise that the planting ceremony would be taking place despite the thread on the forum, I missed it.

I've been in touch with Arbocop (Mike) and the black poplar is still available. I don't think he lives too far away from me so I was planning to collect it and bring it down to Wingham in the near future. Let me know if that would be ok or whether you'd rather wait until next year's event.

Thanks Newt and Elton, that does make me feel a little better.

Rusty, anytime is fine. You may as well have a dabble whilst you're here.

Spoke to Mike this morning and there's an Indian Chestnut and a Black Poplar both of which are about 6 feet tall at the moment. He may be able to get them to his house this weekend in which case I'll aim to bring them down after the Jubilee BH, probably the weekend of the 9th & 10th June.

Steve I'll call when Mike has them to confirm arrangements and make sure it's convenient for you.

I for my sins never knew Jan but she sounded a lovely lady. Since I have been at Wingham what a great sense of esteem they have for members who have sadly passed away. What a great friendly respectful a syndicate it is. The minute silence I thought was very engaging....Long may the soul of Wingham continue...

I'm really sorry I didn't get the trees to you on time, I am working really hard at the moment and have scarcely any time for anything, even my 3 year old son is feeling a bit neglected, and to top it all I've had the lergy and went under for a couple of days! Anyway I'm off today and back at work tomorrow, when I will bring the trees home from their current home in London.

Both trees have been grown from trees within The Royal Parks in London - so they have a good provenance. As I said earlier, the black poplar is not the common hybrid black poplar you get round lakes and industrial estates, this is the UK native black poplar [here]and is a very distinctive and very rare tree. It is a female form which is even more rare, and as the tree normally spreads by collapsing and layering rather than seeding, they are getting even more rare. This is therefore a good opportunity to plant something which benefits the biodoversity and heritage of the UK and also represents someone memorable at the same time.

The indian horse chestnut is just a very fine tree, which flowers in June/July.

Regards

Mike

How did this finally resolve?

Trees at Wingham Newt, via Mike, myself, my sisters and Steve B. Convoluted and a bit late but they are there in readiness for planting at the 2013 event.
