There is a Chinese proverb which says if you ask you may feel a fool for 5 minutes but if you don’t ask you will feel a fool forever.

I have installed this in my apprentices in falconry and the ones who ask are much better falconer’s full stop.

I have been away for fishing for 16 years and even back then I did not know it all and now as I did then act just like my apprentices. I will set up a bivvy and just observe somebody who knows what they are doing. Some think they do but they don’t as it’s usually unlikely they will not let you watch. I sat many years ago for a long weekend watching some barbel anglers on the Avon at the royalty fishery. They were old friends but one really knew his river angling. Much I knew but those little things that popped up I stroked my chin on in thought. I took diagrams of the rigs as many had been their own rigs.

Two weeks later I caught two double figure barbel and my biggest a 16lber. To me eel fishing is now my knew craving to learn.

Anglers say ‘He is a crap fisherman ‘mainly because they see an angler just observing but I don’t care as a fool for 5 minutes but more on the bank for the rest of my life. And as mentioned that angler as soon as he gets to see you catch more then come to you. Humans are a perplexing animal
