Zander fishing

Some nice shots Andrew, it is remarkable how small some fish are that have a go at those eel lures.

Do you ever pick up any Perch while fishing the ressies for Zander?

I haven't yet, although some do. I think that although it's always possible to pick one up, a more concerted effort with smaller lures around structure might be more effective for the perch. There are some very big ones in those reservoirs.

Thanks Anderoo, I had heard rumours that there where a few nice Perch in those reservoirs. But like alot in fishing, you need to specifically target a species for the best chance of catching them. I guess to a certain extent it also shows just how selective you can be with a method as from posts over the last few seasons it does seem that the way you fish does seem very selective in catching the Zander.

I suspect the perch are often in shallower water than the zander, nearer structure, and probably not on the bottom either. The zander do seem to prefer the deeper open water, and always stick to the bottom.

The occasional pike turns up, but they are very occasional, and usually when you go over shallower water. But I haven't fished specifically for the pike, so that could be a coincidence.

Fishing in deeper open water, very close to the bottom, with shad-type lures is extremely selective, 99% of hits are from zander.

Another great day yesterday with Rich, who not only caught his first zander but then went on to catch probably another 40, plus a good sized pike to end the day. Excellent fun all round!

The next 'must-have' zander lure is a rubber crayfish imitation...you read it here first ;)

Already looking forward to the next trip, which would have been Monday but a combination of high winds and me waking up with a horrible cold today is making that unlikely. But soon :)

Ps Dales I had a small perch too this time, a nice surprise. A few others were caught too apparently, up to about 2lb.
