Chubbing

I had another go this afternoon. I couldn't decide between the roach or the chub - the weather was rather roachy and I thought I'd regret it if I didn't have a go for them, so in the end decided to go to the roach stretch, see what happened, and then maybe go to the chub stretch before dark.

The roach fishing was OK, same story again, plenty of small ones and a handful of little chub. I can't seem to find the better fish this year. So after a couple of hours I cut my losses and went to the chub stretch.

Daytime seems at least as good (if not better) than after dark at this time of year, so I baited 6 swims with mash, had a rest and some lunch, and then fished them in turn. The river really is in fantastic condition this year, it's great to see. Good flow, good levels, and just enough of a tinge to prevent it being very clear. I hope it stays that way, the last two winters have been very frustrating.

To cut a long story short I had one bite from the 4th spot I fished, which is a small mid-river depression. It's a boring looking swim but I've now had four big chub from it over the years. I didn't realise why it was a good spot until I did my markering along there in the summer, it's only about 6" deeper than the surrounding water but it obviously makes for a good spot to put a bait.

Anyway, after about 5 minutes in that spot I had a pluck, a pause, and then a good rattly bite as something started wandering off downstream. I hit it and in true chub fashion it zipped towards the near bank and wedged itself fast in the dying rushes. I was glad of the extra strength of the new rod, as I was able to put a lot of steady pressure on it, and after a while it popped back out. After that it was just a couple of unspectacular minutes of ponderous thumps under the rod tip.

I still find it very hard to guess chub weights once they get to a certain size, but I thought this one might be a 6 - although quite short (like most of these chub) it looked really solid in every direction, and felt heavy in the net. However, I didn't think it would weigh as much as it did:

6lb 14oz - my second biggest chub, and quite a fish for November!

Watching it swim off over the shallows was really impressive, it looked as wide across the shoulders as a carp.

Very pleased with that :)

Great Chub Anderoo and in great nick - it must have been about 8 inches across its back to weigh that!

I know! The pic really doesn't do it justice, I wish now I'd got a bit of video of it. Bodes very well for the rest of the winter though.
