Bass on E.Yorks Coast.

Hoping you guys on here can help a bit.

I've been coarse fishing for quite some time and I'm looking to branch out into sea fishing. I was chatting to a mate of mine at the weekend about Bass fishing as I fancy giving it a go.

To be honest, I won't have a clue first time I go so I'm gathering info hoping you guys can point me in the right direction.

I have access to the East Coast between Whitby and Spurn Point so where would be the best place to start?

At which point in the tide cycle is the best time for Bass ??

What method would be used for catching ?? Lures ?? Surface or Diving ?? Big lead on the bottom with live/dead bait ??

What main line would you recommend ??? How strong and what material ??

I currently have a 2.5TC carp rod as the strongest rod I own. Would this suffice as a rod to use or should I be looking at getting a specialist sea rod. Bearing in mind I'll probably only be going sea fishing a couple of times a year.

I'll probably end up putting the majority of any fish (if any) I catch back in the water but if I may try cooking my own fresh caught fish. If this is so, are there any size limits on killing your catch to take home to cook ??

Any other info would be very much appreciated.

Sorry if these questions are a bit on the noddy side but I'd rather ask a few daft questions on here and know what I'm doing rather than make a total pigs-ear of it and have a really bad day of it.

Many thanks for any help offered.

Chris.

you do get bass and I assume most beaches will have them though look for channels near piers and groins etc.

i'm no expert but have caught all of mine of light boat/beach gear and the 2.5lb test curve rod you suggest should be fine.

I'll let others give you more useful info.

Sorry for delayed reply.

Needless to say I was out on the rivers yesterday. I'll compose E-Mail tonight. A bit busy with work at the mo (punishment for taking the glorious 16th off, I suppose).

Thanks for the offer of help Macky1. I'll be in touch shortly.

chris i believe bits of the coast down toward spurn may be more productive. im sure macky will give you more precise advice if you email him.

local angler steve Ianson once did an article in sea angler on bass fishing at Whitby, He caught two nice bass at upgang beach/newholme beck. He also said there may be bass at robin hoods bay. The trouble is very few people around whitby actually target bass. but im sure if you get the conditions right and cast short youll get them.

Ive seen people catch a good few of them from sandsend car park in september. once again you need a bit of a swell, and cast short. i think they use ragworm.

you will not believe the anglers on this coast....

if it isnt a cod they dont want to know

there is so many bass on this coast it is unreal....only a hand full of my freinds (and me) will porpously go out and target them.

and we have had some excellent results with big catches of bass.

the fish aint big, a 3-4lb fish is a good one but there is the occasional 7-10lb fish caught each autumn caught by anglers fishing for cod.

a freind of mine has had up to 18 in a session

anglers seem to be unaware of what is actually swimming off the yorkshire coast...

bass, smoothounds, thornbacks, shark, pollock, spurs, conger on the wrecks and huge tope

but if they are happy scrimping out the last few cod.....hay ho!!!
