Lip Grip Scales

Recommended Posts

Been thinking about how I am going to weigh my 'monsters' when out at sea.. coming to the conclusion it may be best to weigh anything of a big or unmanageable size on shore.. put fish in carp sack and tow inshore if close in.

Considered using a big lip grip scale but having second thoughts after reading comments on this thread:

Any thoughts anyone?

The lip grippers are a good piece of kit.

But for what we catch in this country, I think they are over the top, but thats just my oppinion.

Not many of our species are bad tempered toothy beggers.......mores the pity :D

On a personal note I went for the Rapala Digital Scales, nice scales, got mine for £24.99.

If you fancy a bit of night fishing, they have a back light too, so you can see your reading.

Sorry Chaps, I've got the Berkeley and the Xtools versions, only used the Berkeley so far, didn't enjoy reading the link above so will be taking things very carefully from now on.

I may be stupid but what is the difference hanging a fish from the lip to weigh it and dragging it into a boat by the lip with a hook through it... I know I'm going to regret saying this.

I use the Rapala tool but I do not lift fish to weigh them. We have a lot of fish w/ teeth in Florida. It also helps to keep the fish still and steady when removing the hook. I stow it behind the seat and thether it with a paddle leash.

There is nothing worse than trying to remove a hook from your flesh in a bobbing yak. Once was enough for me.

You just have to decide what works best for you.

Hi Les.

I can see there would be a use for the grippers in the states.

With the types of fish you guys catch (lucky sods :D )

We dont have much to worry about over here with regards to toothy critters, or very large fish, in great numbers.

The domminant sporting fish in the u.k. is the sea bass.

We fish for them using light tackle, 40/60grm spining rods, 10lb main line, steels, plugs, jellies, and live baits.

Our fish stocks have been hammered over the years, by netters, trawlers etc.

So we tend to treat our beloved Bass with respect and care.

We have to, cause there aint many left:D

The only thing we need to worry about with the Bass are his spines, and gill plates.

A thumb in the mouth normaly does it, with the aid of a net.

Got any pics you can post up for us here, we would love to see some of your action over there.

Cheers

yy:)
