Hi All

Whilst the weather has been bad recently thought I'd do some research for future trips and whilst looking at on-line maps I came across this. I was using http://www.multimap.com/ to look for car access to some quiter spots using their map facility. You just type in either the postcode or the place name (sometimes use nearest larger place name) and it gives you a map to which you can enlarge to 1:5,000. However, here's the good bit at the top of the map you can call up an aerial photo (camera icon) of the map you are viewing. These photos seem to be sattelite shots on a clear sunny day and they extend to about half a mile or so out to sea after which they black it out. They are so clear you can see right down through the water and easily see bottom detail, rocks, reefs etc.. Once you have your aerial picture you can scroll east/west etc using the 6 arrows around the picture. One of my favourite spots is the Erme estuary if this link works look at this shot, full of information for a kayak angler .

The maps can be zoomed but I haven't worked out how to save the individual aerial shot as it saves as the map version. However, I have printed the screen and copied into powerpoint, jiggled it around and it prints out quite good.

I have been doing them for several marks I had been thinking of and the bottom information is really useful.

the multimap site is brilliant - well done Yaskalos for finding that one.

Are you going to be about later for a trip to Wonnell? Stoke point to the Erme is a good stretch of coast on a calm day. No bolt holes if it blows up though, so watch the weather.

I reckon Hannafore should be worth a try too.

I've just found this again after getting my PC back up after the HDD gave up. I lost all my faves & am slowly getting back to normal :)

Looks like I missed all the fun, LOL

I think Dan was a bit premature to rant on like that but then again the safety aspect of kayaking must always be at the forefront of the sport & can never be overlooked. Looking at the posts here it's pretty obvious that everyones adult & safety conscious & not likely to go looking to fish in a rip-tide or top of a waterfall etc :D

I like to surf with my yak but also paddle on the flat in the peace & quiet away from everyone whilst getting/keeping fit. The fishing side of kayaking is new to me & is another avenue to explore  I've got a Nookie Rivermonster bouyancy aid (70 neutons of bouyancy) (a present from my site members last xmas)which I ALWAYS wear every time I go out, to me it's part of the yak & I won't go out without it. I wear a helmet when surfing even though I look & feel like a tw*t. If you've ever been hit on the head by 40lb's of plasic then you'll understand, LOL

Being a keen Angler myself, I'm aware of the tides & weather forecasts anyway & always check the tides before planning a trip to the coast.

I want to try drifting over inshore wrecks with Ling rigs & jig with rippers (pirks) as well as other means. By inshore I mean very close to shore & not 3 miles out of course. I think that using a small rod & say Abu 9000 reel loaded with mono would be best & as braid would be harder to unsnag & make the yak unstable. Any advice is welcome on that

Here's a pic of my Scooter with recently added grab lines that have proved handy to store the paddle & possibly my rod & reel  it might save me adding a rod holder?

Nice one Andy, good choice in colour as well. :D

Depending on how low you sit in the water, it might be an idea to get some sought of cover for your reel if you intend to paddle with it lashed to the side... stop it filling with weed and anything else floating by

I know it's loud Steve but I won't get lost if I do encounter problems, I bet u can see it from Mars, LOL

I'm busy setting my gear up now for my 1st trip out fishing from my yak & watching this nasty thunderstorm glide by just to the South of me. I don't fancy paddling around with the threat of lightening looming :( The seas flat, there's no wind & it's looking good except for the thunderous clouds :(

Wish me luck! I'll post any pics of fish I get

As for the reel, I've got an old Diawa Sealine SL175H that I'm filling with 50lb mono right now so I'm not bothered about wetting it, I'll just give it a good rinse l8r on. Or there's my beloved Abu 9000 that would do a good job but I treasure it too much to use it just yet :D

I've got a Shakespeare Fulmar 2920 400 series filled with braid that i use on the boats but I'm frightened to wet that & it might tip me over too, LOL
