Florida Inshore Saltwater Guide Report DaytonaBch Orlando NewSmyrna

Recommended Posts

Spring has sprung on Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River here in the Edgewater Backcountry and New Smyrna Beach. Water temps still chilly but on the rise, the spring shrimp run means game fish are focused on them along the channels and Intracoastal Waterway. The arriving schools of Blues, Jack Crevalle, and Ladyfish from their wintering area of south Florida has great fun fast action on my mixed bag backcountry and Intracoastal trips this time of year. Our local Seatrout, Redfish, Sheepshead, and Black Drum are also hungry for shrimp as the water warms after a chilly winter this 2014. As always I am also taking clients on the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon after Redfish and Seatrout, in the spring the schooling pattern continues but with smaller schools and some single fish as higher water levels and warming water temperatures will have the Redfish beginning to scatter out some. On a recent solo flats fishing charter, Robert a repeat client from Daytona had a great time sight fishing a 26” Red as well as several good Seatrout on a beautiful pretty Mosquito Lagoon morning on a live finger mullet from a early morning school of fish pushing a big wake in the calm conditions. Also catching a few good Trout blind casting tail hooked select shrimp near sand holes in the grass.

On another recent Mosquito Lagoon flats charter, returning clients Richard and Pat from Virginia had less than perfect weather on a drizzly morning, still having a blast catching 4 Redfish with a couple over the slot size at 28” and also a few nice Trout casting tail hooked shrimp, top water retrieving over the grass.

New clients Skip and Brant from the Carolinas had a really fun charter catching about 40 Redfish plus a couple Trout, 30 of the Reds were fun little guys at 1 to 2 lbs, with the other 10 slot sized up to 24”, all caught with live shrimp on the flats, was a windy morning so not sight fished, but picking mixed bottom locations on the flats, Skip caught the best one..........

Having a couple fun fly fishing charters recently, here is Vic from Pennsylvania with a hard fighting Bluefish, spring time can have fast fly action along the Intracoastal with eager and fun to catch Blues, Jacks, and Ladyfish. Vic was using a weighted red and white “Savedow Bluefish Fly” (-:

Father and son Robert and Rob here for the Daytona 500 also caught some Reds and Trout with me on the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon.
