THAMES POLUTION LEVALS UP.

Recommended Posts

Have heard on the local news today that polution Levals in the Thames are on the rise, and that the few salmon that we did have runing the river have all but vanished. I have in the last 25 years fished the upper eastuary of Thames almost weekly, and have seen it go from strength to strengh as far as a desirable fishing venue is concernd. It would be a tragady(sp) if the thames was to be returned to an open sewer That It once was.:angry::angry:

Someone once said to me "Dont worry It could be worse." So I didn't, and It was!

The problem has been the sewage system unable to cope, leading to the dumping of raw sewage into the river.

There is the need to spend many millions in putting it right, but no sign of the necessary funding any time soon.

With the disappearance of the salmon, it will also make it more likely that potential polluters will be able to more strongly claim that levels of water quality and temperature control (in some respects the temperature of the river is more vital than the level of nutrients and pollutants) is too high, given the current biological status, and the costs to industry and the community in keeping discharges down should be relaxed.

Hello Leon

Are these reports of polution late and out of date.

I know that there was a couple of incidents during the wet winters of a few years ago with the sewage system being flooded, but no problems since that I am aware of.

I fish to live and live to fish.

Hi Binatone,

The biggest incidents occurred in the Autumn of 2004, around 18 months ago, but smaller discharges do occur, up to 60 times a year.

I dont have a link for it but the Times had a long article on sewage in the Thames some time last week It was relative to the 2012 games and showed about 20 areas of the river with known raw sewage overflows. All seem related to a victorian pump house that can no longer cope (estimate £2 bn to sort it )

The preferred option — a 22-mile (35 km) — tunnel to intercept discharges from numerous overflows throughout London — would cost up to £2 billion and take 15 years to build.

So we can send men to the moon and launch missions into the depths of the solar system; we can precision bomb military targets with pinpoint accuracy; we can build a state of the art Olympic facility; but it would take us 15 years and £2b to build a 22 mile sewage pipe! Pathetic.

I thought the thames Estuary was a lot clean since the dumping of semi sewage on the Barrow deeps was stoped around 10 or 15 years ago.
