Helford River

Hi,

I'm going on a family holiday to Helford River at the end of May, staying near Helford Passage.

I know this is a Bass Nursery area, so obviously won't fish for them. Could any one tell me what I'm likely to catch at this time of year, and do I need a rod license to fish it?

Many thanks

Dave

The Helford also has mackerel, loads of garfish, pollack and it is one of the best chances you have of catching gilthead bream in this country - in the deep water areas.

As for the bass, you can fish for them, but only on a catch and release basis. ANY bass caught from a vessel has to be released regardless of size and furthermore, sandeel is prohibited as bait, fresh or frozen, anywhere within the nursery areas, shore or boat.

If you are taking your kayak you would do well to explore the rocky areas just outside the estuary, if it is calm you can get out to the Manacles and fish for bass or pollack out there, and especially fish over the bar - flatties.

You don't need a license. Nice area, enjoy!

Hi Simon and SM,

Thanks for the advice. I'm really looking forward to it. I saw many Gilthead Bream when I ran the Sealife Centres in Brighton and Hastings, but have never caught one.

Will post photos if I get lucky (with the fish that is..... :whistling: )

Cheers,

Dave
