Tope Trip Wales

Simon Everetts on the road at the moment & asked me to post his message at KFUK here as well.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right then folks, it is about this time of year the tiope begin to come inshore off West Wales. We had a belting weekend last year for them when 5 of us camped at a very nice, but unpronouncable, campsite about 10 minutes from the launching point. Very convenient!

Looking at the tides and discussing things we have a couple of weekends planned for these wonderful sporting fish - and by then there will be mackerel about for bait (although it is better to take frozen straight out and get fishing - then try and get some later). Black bream will also be on the reef - so you shouldn't blank.

The weekends that have been pencilled in so far are June 10th, 17th and 24th. Which of these suit the most folks - but a hint, the 10th and 24th are the best tides! High water around 8 each end of the day - perfect for an early morning start and over the 24th it is nearly the longest day you will get. Any takers?

Tackle need not be specialist - a standard sized multiplier for beach casting - so Abu 6500 - 9000 size is plenty. A 12lb class rod and mono of 15lb up is fine. It is the end tackle that needs to be sorted -

for convenience a tapered leader like that used as a shock leader for casting gives an easy wind through to heavy mono. I use a link swivel on the end of this, then a further 6 feet of 80lb mono with a swivel to the link and a link swivel on the other end. A SHORT wire trace for a biting length - you only need 10" - OR heavy mono in the 100lb bracket (I prefer 30lb wire as it presents better) with a swivel to one end for easy on/off from the mono rubbing trace link swivel and a 6/0 or 8/0 barbless hook. I am going to try some semicircle hooks this time to see how they compare. Normally Mustad barbless Ray and Tope hooks are what we use - they work fine and even the doggies get hooked on them.

Some other items you need for tope - a good leather glove (garden glove, riggers glove or similar - gardening gloves are £2 pair!) This is to help handle the trace line with a lively fish on the end and to grip the pectorl fin - their skin is like sandpaper.

Pair of pliers to crush barbs on normal hooks and to be available if you need to cut the wire or get down inside the mouth to get hold of the hook.

Anchor - essential for tope fishing here or you will be off the spot in minutes. 2 metres chain advisable and 50m of anchor warp plenty.

That's it other than your usual safety items. It is a good crack and last year we had 17 fish between us over the 2 days - everybody hooked up. There are about 10 who have indicated an interest in coming so far - so a good group.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll try and make one of these weekends but I will also work around Zzippy's dates as he missed out on the tope trip last year due to work committments. We may end up fishing the mark during a week in early June.
