casting distance - type of line

The Flying Tench

Recommended Posts

Its not always thin vs fat ,in the case of a fly and fly line the fat flyline will go further than just mono and a fly.

Never used modern braid but isnt it coarser than mono but thinner pound for pound.

Rods and their rings and how line comes off a reel also count

Having seen some clowns making huge swishing noises with their carbon rods i know my old fiberglass one will outcast them with the same float even underhanding it !

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Tench,

If distance is the only consideration - braid by a mile.

Sunline PE Jigger 8 HG
Sasame X8 Premium

The main consideration is diameter. Mono and braid of the same diameter should cast about the same distance if everything else is equal (mono slightly further perhaps, if the braid is 'rough'?). But to take the force of the cast you also need enough strength in the line, and the braid will be much stronger than the mono for the same diameter. Or you could use a shock leader tied to the thin mono.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Nanofil knocks spots off of everything for distance - but i'd never put it on a reel again because it's so unreliable.

Thin smooth braids will cast well but can be prone to wind knots - again making them unreliable.

I stick with a nice soft mono for light course fishing, Berkeley Fire line for light lure fishing and 60lb Whiplash for pretty much everything else except sea fishing into rocks (when distance is never an issue) where I'll spool up with the cheapest, springiest, hardest mono I can find.
