Alternative perch baits and tactics

I'm fishing a syndicate water down near ringwood that's got some big perch in.

Problem is it's full of roach, Rudd and carp. The other species make targeting the perch really really hard. Worms and maggots for example are a no go. Live and dead baits and lure are not allowed.

Also if I bait anywhere the stupid carp move in and make float fishing tricky by constantly swimming into the line.

Any ideas of a different approach?

Sounds like lobworms and put up with the filthy pond pigs - it's a bit late in the year for lures unless it drops clear and dropshotting becomes an option.

If there are loads of small roach/rudd, that's probably what the perch eat. So perhaps the best thing is to continually feed maggots in order to concentrate the bait fish and attract the perch? Once the perch are present, fish for them with lobs, maybe up in the water e.g. dropshot style?

Remember Ken at wingham? He went to great pains to isolate the species he was after by strategically feeding off/diverting the other species. It was very impressive. Perhaps there's a way to keep the carp away from the perch spot with cunning feeding?

Hi Andrew it's a possibility. The problem is any feed at all and the carp move in. Because the lake is shallow lines bites are a nightmare.

Last time out I tried exactly that, two rods one with prawn and feeding maggots another patternostered bait off the bottom and feeding cloud groundbait on both rods the carp caused 10 times more line bites than real bites.

I'm thinking the only option is bolt rigs and back leads :(

Just thought of another method to get around the problem, fly fish for the perch it can be very effective. Baby dolls, cat's whiskers in fact any fry imitation. Or isn't that allowed too?

Emma fair enough you may have a job convincing the bailiff that you caught the Rudd on a size 4 with 2 maggots though lol but take your point you need a bigger hook to give a half chance of hook up ,2 hook rig 16 haired off the back of a 6 still hard to explain away sounds like it`s a difficult one to overcome Rich

Yes , you could be right about size 2s and a couple of Maggots, but you can catch Rudd on size 8s and even 6s with bread flake. You may get bigger ones (Rudd) than with you would with maggots, but I would say dont worry about that too much. I suppose it depend upon ones aspirations so far as Perch go. If your happy with fish up to a couple of pounds then the Rudd 'may' be a bit large, but for bigger Perch don't be put off using larger baits. For me to ultimate (by far) Perch bait is a live Perch of around 5 inches, (float fished on a size 1/0 'cat hook') and if you havn't got any Perch then another species of around that size will do. The only place that maggots have in my perch fishing is for catching bait, although spinners do the job of getting even bait sized ones better.

Are ther any rules (anywhere) which state how long one must take to reel in a fish? when does taking your time become live baiting?
