What weight is your trout rod?

I am interested to know what weight rod is most popular for trout fishing and why.

Until recently I have always seen a 7 weight recommended as an all round rod.

A small poll on a local forum up here in NE Scotland seems to indicate that maybe folk are fishing a bit lighter than a couple of years ago. The most popular weight was 5 with 4 a close runner up, but a recent post on here spoke about using an 8 weight on the Test.

My normal rod is a 3 weight but I have just started using a 2 weight for brownies and I love it, so what do you use and how did you decide on it.

I've got a 12# intended for Tarpon but use a 9#.

For Trout I use a 6# on the reservoirs and bigger lakes a 4# on the rivers and small lakes.

My rods range from a #2 split-bamboo trout rod to a #12 carbon tarpon/sailfish travel rod with several others in between.

I also own (and occasionally use) a number of greenheart trout and salmon rods built before the AFTM system was invented.

My largest salmon greenhearts are 14.5' (f***** heavy); 17' (extra f****** heavy); and 18' (f****** heavy in spades)

Iron men and wooden rods in those days :)

Wouldn't fancy a whole day of swinging one of those around

Has anyone had a cast or tried to cast with one of those 18# Marlin/Shark rods or do you just trail the line out from the back of the boat.

My 12# is hard enough work.

I try to use a 4-5 wt if I can but have a 6 and a 7 if conditions dictate. After using a 4-5 8 and a half footer, picking up a 10 foot #6 feel like bloomin hard work and is difficult to get used to!
